Oh my, I left for work and this thread blew up! I'm excited ^^
@sorible and @VibrantFox thanks for the reply, really did ease my mind a bit. ^^
Just echoing these feelings out there, @LettieKat and @UrMom , I agree on the point you make,
Art and Artist are different things... My characters straight up say things I think are wrong, naive or straight up bullshit lies, but I write it for the sake of keeping them real, because what matters is what they feel and not what I feel... If can do that, it is entirely possible to do the other way around and trasnfer my feelings onto characters.
An artist might (conciously or not) choose to transfer their trauma to art to deal with it, and that is perfectly ok and healthy.
@Kura just to clarify, I made the pool to include to most views I had seen echoed out in the wild, I share your feelings that thinking 'NSFW = horny teen' is very misguided... I just had to included because someone out there might actually think that, and I wanted to gather a general feel for the opnions of folks here at TAPAS.
@joannekwan That actually made me change my vote... I struggled a whole lot when I was I getting into tapas because I felt a bit cornered, being a furry is often seen as 'bad thing' on the internet and I was anxious about it, I actually went out of my way to censor some scenes that in retrospect I realized where pretty tame thanks to your comment on that other topic... Heck I still am anxious about it sometimes.
But I do think you and others here have made an excelent point, better be true to my own truth than trying to put a cute little family friendly mask over it and pretend I'm PG... If anything, that would be misleading.
@Colours_dont_match
As a writer who loves dialog and motion, I envy people who make comics as you guys can translate thousands of words in a single panel... Why would anyone feel the need to break a perfectly set mood and characterization by inserting those lines in between it is beyond me!
Though I am more of a fan of seeing the actual deed being done... I think you can get some neat an unique characterization when you see how characters behave in privacy... But i totally do not fault an artist for not wanting to go there.
@rajillustration
I think a certain degree of censorship is sensible, don't get me wrong, I think appstores are beeing way too punitive of NSFW creators for the sake of appealing to apple and certain markets that happen to be very prudish.
I think the perfect way to set it up would be to allow for these works to have some visibility, like make a check that adults can go through, not just flat out remove content for the possibility of it ever being found by a minor... Seriously teens will find a way to be horny regardless of what they are allowed to consume.
I do agree that a lot of starter artists tend to not be trustworthy too... I wasn't... When I wrote the first version of my story 7 years ago it was a psychological map of every repressed part of my personality, including my still undiscovered sexuality.
But I also think... If we never let those stories have a place to begin with... How are they to start? How can we get the good stuff witho skimming through the mud a bit?
It's like those jobs that ask for 5 years experience for entry level positions... How does that even work?
Also, hope I didn't come off as challenging, I agree with a lot of what you said xD
