Popular and trending... but never at the same time!

Forgive my ignorance, but I'm trying to figure out how the 'Popular' and 'Trending' sections work.
When I update, I tend to get into the top trending section, then disappear, and then reappear in the top popular section.

I've seen other comics show up at the same time in both sections (Gamer Cat).

Can anyone tell me how those sections actually work? I'm cold, hungry and confused.

Your comic is currently in both sections! But you're only on the first page of Popular and the last page of Trending.

I'm not sure how it works either, but I've noticed that (like you) I usually get Trending and then jump into Popular. Also, it seems easier to get in the first page of Trending but easier to stay in the Popular section once you get there?

From what I know, it's just the timeframes.

Trending is for comics that are currently hot at the moment of visiting Tapastic.

Popular is for comics that have been consistently hot over the past 12-24 hours.

Actually, I've noticed that my comic will be on 'trending' when it has just gotten a lot of views (say, maybe after I make a popular forum post that directs a lot of people to my comic, or after I just updated), and I get into the 'popular' section after getting a lot of likes. For instance, the other day someone new found my comic and they liked every update all the way up to the most recent. I was on the first page of Popular after that.
In short, I think 'trending' means a lot of people are seeing your content, 'popular' means a lot of people are liking your content or subscribing.

I've noticed comics that manage to get into trending and popular at the same time.

BUT you can't be in popular and fresh at the same time. Which is really frustrating for me because I I update everyday but NOT at the exact same time stamp, so if I manage to make it to popular I'll end up kicking myself out of popular by updating. Then I have to wait for other people up upload comics to push me out of fresh and also have to wait for the next thirty min listing refresh. Which is pretty shit since I get way more hits in popular than fresh.

No you can't. It's happened countless times for me. I'll be in popular, update, disappear from popular until I get pushed down from fresh, then appear in popular again around the same place I was before.

Unless something changed from the last time I was up there a few days ago

You can update your comic and be on the fresh page, and then appear on the popular section - it's just rare.

However, if you're already on the popular section and THEN update your comic, then the popular section will weigh your most recently updated episode more and bump you off.

Not really since I still end up in the same place in popular and I doubt that my new episode views are not matching my previous episode views in a mater of 30 mins but OK (unless I'm reading you explanation wrong)

Okay hang on this is making sense to me.

@michaelson is saying that if your newest update gets very popular very fast, it is technically possible to be in fresh and popular at the same time.

But you are correct in your observation that updating bumps your comic out of popular.

The reason isn't "you can't be in fresh & popular simultaneously," it's that Popular apparently only samples your newest episode. So when you update, no one has interacted with the newest episode, so the system sees it as "no longer popular" and you get knocked out of the Popular section until people interact with the new one.

Am I understanding this?

I actually think he's attempting to say is that you can be in fresh and go to popular (resulting in being in both at the same time). But if you already are in popular and appear in fresh you get kicked out of popular.

I just got confused with the round about explanation explaining the problem/scenario I was having because I assumed it was something else only to actually just have it be what I was complaining about.

If not then no son, that does not clarify anything.
