Possible art jobs

Some of you probably already know about this but it is something I never thought of and forgot about.

A few years ago I took a train trip across the US and at dinner one night we met an artist who created the art for slot machine games.

Like I said, you all probably know about this but on the off chance of few of you hadn't known about this I thought I would list the idea. I have no contacts and I'm not sure how you would go about it but the indication that my friend and I got from this guy was that it was a fairly lucrative field, especially now that there were so many slot machine games online.

Sorry this isn't a linked gig or reference or anything like that but in talks recently with a different friend who did comics they weren't aware of this job either.

I used to see positions for slot machine games in my job searches fairly often. A lot of times these machines will be produced by companies that create a number of casino games. A background in animation/motion design is probably helpful, perhaps a little bit of programming as well. Doing a search for "Slot Game Designer" or "Slot Game Artist" on a job site like Glassdoor or Indeed will probably turn up a few results, though the title of the position may vary from company to company(in my experience tech leaning art jobs have this problem a lot)

Even if the job listed is not what you are looking for, follow the links and find the company producing the kind of games you wish to work on. They most likely have a careers page with all sorts of other jobs listed, including art jobs, and it will be easier to find out if they have any open positions for what you are looking for.

Thank you so much for posting this. I'm a writer, not an artist but like I said we met this man on the train over dinner and he was a hoot (they screwed up on a game one and paid out bucks!!!) but I'd never thought of an actual "job" doing that.

Any time I hear of things like that I like to pass them along if I can. I really appreciate your expanding on it.

Speaking as somebody who has worked as a professional Games Artist, you won't see these online slot machine art roles advertised unless you're looking for Games Artist roles. In fact, MOST of the games artist roles here in the UK are actually for companies like King who specialise in these online casino games, and it SUCKS because I'm morally opposed to doing work for the gambling industry.

I did apply for one once years back because I was desperate. They really took the piss with a ridiculously complex and involved art test that involved both UI AND Illustration asset creation, then I didn't even get the job (I was kinda relieved because I really don't want to work for a gambling company ever but at the time I really needed money... luckily I got a big freelance gig shortly after).

So yeah, it's actually a pretty well-known job for games artists, but not one people are necessarily proud of, partially because games artists mostly hate "getting stuck on UI", but also because many would really rather be making like... fun RPGs and Adventure games than milking vulnerable people for money like that, and like all games art jobs, it's INCREDIBLY competitive.

I appreciate hearing others unusual art jobs.

The lion's share of my current income comes from designing professional wrestlers T-shirts. It's a business model built entirely on word of mouth and my having once been a wrestler. It's an eclectic client base that frequently has trust issues and sometimes horrible business sense so they CAN be challenging but it also means there's only a few of us working nationwide for multiple clients.

I have to say... that's incredibly interesting. I think it's because I was in small theatre for such a long time, I learned always to pass along possible gigs, whether running a light board or helping with sets or even acting, it's just being helpful to the rest of us in the arts, no matter what they are.

Having been a wrestler you "speak their language" and understand their issues with how they want things to look. That's pure gold.

I have no desire to work in the art field myself, but I heard creating stock images or animations can be fairly lucrative

Funny seeing a thread about this here.
Before corona I was a developer of Physical Casino slot games that (if I remember correctly) were shipped out to Mexico . I worked on games such as Festive Dance, Star Dust, Egyptian Magic and Dragons Charge . We had artists from a studio in South Africa who helped us make art for some of the games, while some were in LA.

I think I've seen a lot of jobs regarding slot games on ArtStation !

I work as a motion designer/graphic designer and if you have a strong background in video, animation, 3D and illustration, you can get a pretty good paying job that isn't necessarily game based. Some game based jobs require coding and UI/UX experience. Learn after effects and cinema 4D and it can be pretty good on your portfolio.

I'm loving that my funky little post about something I was unaware of is resulting in more people making suggestions that maybe a few others hadn't thought of for jobs, etc.

It's making me more aware and I always consider learning something new a good thing. Thank you everyone that's making suggestions. Always nice to see people helping and sharing.
