My parents both said the eyes were too large. What do you think?

I would change the method of drawing the head and use the Loomis method or something similiar.
It´s impossible to get this right the way you are trying right now.
I would also always use reference.
The start should be circle with cut off side and then you can place the features, eyebrows, ear, nose, hairline
then you can attach the chin and place the mouth. It will be way easier.
Look at the proportions in this example, where the nose, ears etc go.
The eyes are around 4 times too big but that´s a typical mistake
