haha, dont take it literally or personal, Alter is definitely not about your age. You could say this to a ten year old and it wouldnt even have to be a boy. In this context its really just an expression of amazement. Something like old friend. The perfect occasion would be a soccer ball missing the goal only 5 cm.

More a matter of context. But its not common to address you as -old man- in german - that would be -Opa- granddad and quite vulgar outside your family. There used to be -Alter Schwede- before -Alter- but I dont know, if this refers to the swedes in the 30 years war and how???
