Hm, I don't work professionally but from what I've seen just about any indie musician or game company is automatically suspect in my books because of all the horror stories I see from freelancers. It blows my mind that people working within similar creative industries can't appreciate or value (monetarily) the work that the artists do for them. But I guess your story is another reason why I see them hardline the "Don't do any work until you've both signed a contract and have been paid either in part or full" advice all the time.

Yeah, funnily enough... I DID have a contract. But my friend convinced me that "they were good people" and "there's no need to ask to be paid ahead". So yeah uh... if you ever work professionally, learn from my mistakes, haha: TRUST NO ONE.

@getsuart Nope, not at all. I'm already a well-established professional (as far as comic book coloring is concerned) and this was a side job for an indie company with no contacts whatsoever, so the only thing it was good for was wasting time. Though at least I did have an excuse to force myself to work on my painting skills. Which is always good :3
