Okay, so I know a good about of people do this, and it doesn't exactly need to be apparent, but show the character, tell us their name, and why you put them in.
So for example:
This is my main character Beatrice, and growing up I never saw anyone who looked quite like me in any sort of media, so I made Bea when I was 16 to make myself feel better.

He ain't got no name. A lot of the background characters from The Ghoul are either people I know in real life or based off of characters in other media (some of them are just straight made up tho)
