Predator: Siege

From the trees and under cloak, the Yautja examines its quarry. The prey is all together. Soon the hunt can begin. It clicks to itself, and a faint M'lady echoes through the canopy.

"Ooookay," I whip out my phone, opening up the compass app, "let's see what this badboy can do without signal."

What do I notice about the time and date?

"I mean west, judging by the sun."

This world's sun is smaller and fainter than you're used to. You glance at your phone and still don't catch a signal.

I look at the sun, chewing my lip, then start walking. "Alright, cool, chase the sun. If I'm dead, maybe that's s'posed to be God or something. C'mon, time bandits, we're losing daylight."

I appear, chain gun in one hand and a half-eaten rutabaga in the other. The blazing sun glints off of my solid diamond shoulder pads like a million tiny knives.

"Who ordered the Cheese steak?"

I toss the rutabaga behind me and load the chain gun. The rutabaga explodes, killing an innocent sand gopher. The chain gun explodes, slightly tarnishing the shoulder pads.

"Ya want fries with that?"

As far as your phone knows it's still 2018.

Let's just put his character on autopilot. It's a fairly long walk to the nearest village. Good time for more conversation.

I know we're kinda making this up as we go, but I've decided to stick closer to the original story. I'll try not to railroad, but the theme is still "pre-gunpowder warriors."

"Uh- oh, right, I'm Camille by the way," I hold out a hand to shake, "and, y'know, kinda the same. Less trees though. And fuel. And clean air. Internet though - that's a big win."

"I recognize that those are words."

"I am Father Montoya, S.J. I presume that you are a Christian?"

[punkarsenic]

(ok rolling w it)

"Oh, uh... yeah? My family's Pentecostal, but I kinda float. D'you have a Pentecostal church in the oldern days? Also, what's the S. J. stand for?"

"The would be the Society of Jesus. I am a Jesuit. Are Jesuits even around in your time?"

You marched through the alien landscape. And it was alien. Besides the gas giant overhead, the sun was smaller and dimmer. The trees and grass were normal enough, but some of the bugs weren't.

"Fascinating," Montoya said. "I don't think this one has any eyes."

The insect hissed and showed its teeth. Its extended its tongue, which also had teeth.

"Yikes!" the priest said, and flicked it away.

"Anyway," he said. "To answer your other question, I have never heard of the Pentecostal Church. But am I right in assuming it is Protestant?"

"Whoof... that's not..." I step back from the plants, onto the more beaten path, "that's not a twenty-eighteen thing, for the record. I guess it could be a highly evolved venus flytrap, or something."

Montoya paused to translate for Abelard and Toshiro. The priest had a knack for instant translation, you had but to speak someone's name and Montoya would interpret in almost-real-time.

"Not a very devout person?" he asked, when he could get back to you.

"Well, I'm not exactly a nun," I say, as I take a knife and rag from my tool belt and go to cut off one of the toothed plants.

The hunter crouched atop the tree branch to watch the prey go by. Now there were six of them and two riding animals.

One of the soft meats was still showing up dark, even if the mask did enhance the hunter's natural thermal vision. But that was all right. It made things more interesting.

So I use my knife to jab at the bug, trying to get it into the rag (and dead)

You impale the bug on the point of your knife. Dull yellow blood splashes on the blade and there is a smell like nail polish remover. Smoking, the steel blade begins to dissolve.
