Everyone turned and headed toward the stairs after the freed captives, a few of the merfolk leaning on Ashโs men, one of them being carried since she couldnโt shift. Once on deck, they made their way to the lifeboats, one of which was already in the process of being released.
The dragon squirmed, suddenly anxious. โI donโt wanna be on another boat!โ she cried, wrapping herself around Ashโs neck and burying her head in his throat. โPlease, Papa, donโt make me go on another boat, please!โ
โOkay, sweetheart, we wonโt get on the boat,โ Ash soothed, glancing at Jin, questions in his eyes. They had nothing to do with her calling him โPapa,โ and everything to do with the boat itself.
Jin shrugged as he moved to help a young angel girl with a broken arm to the lifeboat. โMy guess is she associates boats with the bastards that ruined her life. Besides, itโs not like she needs to be in one, anyway. Iโm sure she can swim just as well as you can.โ
Ash narrowed his eyes at the thinly veiled jab. โI can swim just fine, thank you very much.โ
Jin grinned at him. โCan you do it without water propulsion?โ
โEat me.โ
Jin stuck out his tongue and tugged on his lower lid before leaping backward over the shipโs railing. When he appeared, he splashed Ash and the dragon with his black and silver tail, flipping him off and laughing before diving back under the water.

Itโs been six months since Coby was made to return with the Sarathianโs, and both he and Ash have been fighting Scott on two fronts in their war to save the merfolk and other Divine and mythics who are being hunted and killed for profit.
Ash has developed a bad drinking problem, putting a strain on his and Cobyโs relationship. Ash has taken in a water dragon, Silkie, who is apparently soul bonded to the Turners. Alise has been waiting for a sample of the paralytic used against the merfolk to prevent them from changing so she can make an antidote, and thereโs a new drug on the streets that is causing mass addiction and deaths among humans called โscale.โ
