“I have a question,” he said after a brief moment of silence, swinging his bottle over the side of the chair.
Alice glanced at him, waiting.
“You and Dad grew up together, didn’t you?”
“Mhm,” she nodded. “Sure did.”
“How did you know he was the one?”
Her lips turned up in a smile, her eyes glittering with emotion. “I always knew, Ash,” she said softly. “He was a little slow on the uptake, of course, but I knew from the very first moment I saw him.”
“Sure, but, how did you know? I mean, was there some sort of sign, or spark or something?”
Alice laughed, the sound like wind chimes on a windy day. “You’re asking if I experienced the same connection you did with Coby.”
“Sort of, yeah,” Ash admitted sheepishly.
“Well, the short answer is no, I didn’t. No human does, no matter what you read in books..."
