“You’re thinking about what Sophie said, aren’t you?” Ash said, drawing near.
Coby nodded. “Are you already with a mate, Ash?” he asked softly. “Because if you are—”
“I’m not,” Ash said quickly, his tone sharper than he’d intended. He stopped behind Coby, his hands in his pockets. “I’m not with anyone else,” he said more gently.
“Then what did she mean by ‘new’?”
Ash hesitated for a long moment, increasing Coby’s anxiety. “I had a boyfriend,” he finally said, his voice low and quiet. “I broke it off with him a while ago after he…” he swallowed hard before inhaling slowly, his breath ragged. “It doesn’t matter,” he finally said.
