This Chinese tomb-raiding novel starts with antiques, prison, and poverty — and gets good fast

A man gets out of prison after seven years and starts looking back on the road that ruined his life.

What begins as a story about a poor kid from a freezing border town trying to make money through old coins and porcelain slowly turns into something much darker: scams, black markets, grave pits, flooded tomb passages, bronze artifacts, and a crew that may already be too late to the tomb they’re breaking into.

The best part is that it doesn’t read like power fantasy. It feels raw, hungry, and grounded. The protagonist isn’t a genius hero. He’s just desperate, angry, and trying to claw his way out of poverty one bad choice at a time.

There’s also a strong emotional thread outside the tombs, especially once Xu Jing shows up, which gives the story more weight than just “go underground, find treasure.”

If you like gritty Chinese fiction with antiques, underworld tension, and tomb-raiding atmosphere, this one is very easy to get invested in.
