Thanks. I like your cover as well. And you don't have to change your cover. I just changed mine after the second time because at that point I was finally ready and confident enough to launch it online for others to see and wanted to celebrate that feeling.

This is just my opinion. I don't know you personally. But from what I can see from the covers. It seems that you got more comfortable with not only what your story is about but how the public would perceive your story. And that makes me happy. I'm glad you feel comfortable enough to be open with yourself and the public. If I'm wrong about this my bad.

It’s mainly an issue of me becoming more comfortable with drawing again (I had stopped drawing for almost 30 years). When I first got back into it the images were very simple, but as I familiarized myself with modern art programs (Krita in particular) and the tools they offer I got more confident and so the art improved.

The covers also changed as the story progressed. The story covers a time period of twenty years, and during those twenty years the characters aged and became more adult.

It was always gonna be a gay story - the whole point of it is telling the story of growing up gay and closeted in the 1980’s and 1990’s.

I see. Well I like it. And the covers definitely give off that feel of at first feeling closeted and slowly growing more comfortable and open. I really like it.

This is a cool thread! I LIKE IT. Here's my cover evolution:

This first one was just for Webtoon. I didn't realize they needed a vertical thumbnail (Because I've straight up never seen a vertical one before on Webtoon.... why do they need it?! ) as well as a square one, so I had to make this. It's not very good because I was the sickest I'd ever been in my life when I made it, but oh well, I don't think anyone on Webtoon saw it anyways. 🤷

Here's my earliest sketch for the Book of CoL cover back when I was still working on Page's character design:

Then I revised the idea and fleshed it out but it still didn't feel quite right to me as Page seemed extra stiff and not quite what I had in mind:

So I redrew it

Here's the finished cover I ended up with for Book of CoL: The Ember Child. I really like how it turned out (even if I still think the characters seem a little stiff.)

My previous comic cover was from early 2020, and is one of the earliest digital pieces of art I made

It has a lot of issues, ranging from image size not being good for tapas, not being well developed because I could only work on this during school, it not looking good on a small screen, the main character being shirtless turning away normal viewers because they might think its furry content ONLY for furries , and other stuff. Been wanting to replace it for a while and back in November, I finally got that opportunity! And here it is:

Notable improvements over the old one: better colors for logo, actually well thought out in terms of composition since I can draw digital at home, shows two important characters along with the main one, sells to potential readers that its not just super serious raw raw action (?), wont turn away regular views because the mc isn't shirtless shonen action hero style (??????????????) I also did it in clip studio paint which recorded a timelapse which I cant post here because the file would be too large T_T

I definitely like the second one. The characters have more personality with the clothing and poses and you're right it still gives off action vibes but not serious action vibes.

I love seeing everybody's cover art! It's really neat to see different cover trends in different genres, and the variety of art styles in this thread have been super cool to look through.

I've still got my first cover for my series, but I have been doing individual covers for each chapter set. Here are mine so far! I've been sticking to a pretty rigorous setup with a gothic metal inspired logo at the top and a chapter title at the bottom, but I've got some fun ideas on how I want to break away from it for future covers.

The chapter covers usually establish the main colors I use for their respective chapters, so they kinda act as big color palettes too, lol

Thank you! There's a couple reasons why I decided to change it.

1. It looks nice when it's big and up close like here on the forums, but most people see it as a smaller version and a lot of the art gets lost because of that. The colors are pretty dark, so when the image is small you can only mostly see the teeth and eyes of the two upper characters on the right of the cover. And unfortunately, the colors for the top right character REALLY blend in with the background when the cover is small, so she's really hard to see. (Which is a shame because I loved how she turned out so much )

2. I probably shouldn't have made a character that shows up fairly later in the series the biggest, and, double whammy, simultaneously most concealed on the cover. Unfortunately I don't think it serves the purpose of a cover well enough because it's not as intriguing as I thought it would be.

3. The lower half is kinda muddy design wise. There's a lot going on, and not in a cohesive way. Once again, I made this more tailored for Webtoon, so I was focusing on the top part looking the best since that's what people would see. (Screw Webtoon, hate that platform, lol)

I still really like the art of the second cover, but I think unfortunately it's not doing it's job well enough as a cover, so it's time for a new one. :^)
