The Comedy Genre, and the Action Genre are two of my favorite genres.
I always love comedy. I'm a bit of a slapstick fanatic. When I began drawing cartoons for the first time, it was with the sheer intent to create strange, silly comedies. Inspired by years and years of binge nothing but old cartoons, and Adult Swim content, I wanted to make a series or two that felt like a huge homage to what I loved back then and still love today. Heck, some jokes (even the really crass ones) still get a big laugh out of me, even if they wouldn't dare make that same joke again. The neat thing about comedy is that its hard, so you really have to try to make it work, even if its by complete accident.
I'm also a big fan of action. I blame Kids WB and its indoctrination through the action cartoons thanks to good ol' Batman & Superman. While I've never watched the original Batman: TAS, I HAVE seen its sequel series The New Batman Adventures, which while not perfect, it still holds up greatly, and is the most immediate version of the character I recognize, even more than the original TAS version. As for Superman, its everything I liked about TNBA but somehow better. Both introduced me to decades old characters that I would have never really care for if I never tuned in. Something about their contrast in atmosphere and how they mesh their stories (and classic comic stories) so well is what really opened the door to more and more action content AND superhero content. Especially with one of my favorite superheroes of all-time, SPIDER-MAN (PETER PARKER, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN). The thing about action is that, just like comedy, its not easy. You can splice in a bunch of fights, gunplay, explosions, death, and hard-hitting abuse, but if you don't make it gel with a competent story, then it'll just feel like a mixed bag. And trust me, there's enough shows that just hit like a mixed bag but have great action... or they have an interesting premise, but the lack of action just really bogs the whole thing down (there've been some recent shows I've watched where that REALLY was the case... eugh.)
If anything, those two main genres are the inspiration for two of my novels:
