Question from Writer asking about PAID webtoon commission

Hello, everyone. I’d like to ask something about webtoon commissions regarding payment. First off, I’ll tell the details about my commission:

It’s basically a promo webtoon (one shot webtoon that will promote my novel: https://www.webnovel.com/book/16544151906440205/Viper-in-the-Vale), the webtoon will be 15 panels and I’d like for it be in anime or manhwa art style.

With that being said, is $150 for 15 panels a fair price for this sort of short-term project? I’ll finalize this later once I’m sure based on the answers I’ll get from the artists.

I think it's depends on the artist and the skill level you wanted. Like, a comic page will have an average 6 of panels, and if one page is $60, you'll have to think about if they'll be doing the panelling, linearting, only tone shading, none at all or if you want it fully colored by that one artist themselves.

If you ask me, I'll say that it's probably a little too low, but pretty acceptable as long as there's nothing complex in the characters design, background and how you want it colored. I most likely won't took up on it tho, but I believe there's a lot of artist on this forum that will be happy on taking the job.

I heard that $10 per panel seems to be standard for assistant work (lineart or colour only), so it might be a little bit too low, considering the artist is working the whole process (from thumbnail to typesetting). But there are other factors that can affect the price like how quickly do you need it done by, the experience level of the artist and whether you already have the character designs and other concept art.

This seems like an interesting project, though. I’d be keen to apply when you open up commission offers ^^

Thanks a lot for the info, you guys. I'll be working on how I'll plan for my project to work and of course, I'll earn and save up as much as I can for this project.

$150 won't get you quality work, unless you find an artist who is passionate about your project.

Through my own research, quality work generally costs around $20-30 a panel, which amounts to $300-450 for what you are looking for. This isn't even including the price of creating characters which generally go for $50.

So for your panels, you are really looking at $400-550 with only 2 characters showing up (Cider and Darrell).

Of course, you can do this cheaply by using websites like Fiverr, and outsourcing your characters to one person while having another draw the panels.

I don't want to be seen as promoting people whose services I never used, but there is someone who can draw the characters for $15 a person and another who will draw 20 panels for $200. Using them you could have a 2 character 20-panel webtoon for $230.

Of course, this probably won't look nearly as good as the more expensive option, you really do pay for what you get.

I'd also be really wary when searching for artists and find someone who matches the art style that you want to capture or else you'll end up paying money for something that doesn't match your vision.

Oh, I see. So, that's the standard price. I'll take note of it. Well, I don't really have to worry about character illustrations since friends drew my characters. If not that, I can use picrew.me to create my character/s for free.

Tho, these are great sources and info that I got. I'll also take note of this and check it out. Since I'd want quality for my project, I'll focus on saving and earning till I reach to that price. Not to mention, I'll be sure to ask artists for samples of their work to see if it matches what I have in mind. Thanks for the suggestions and advice.
