I absolutely hate the manga Gantz. I read through good portion of it but I ended up just getting so sick of how nothing good ever happens. I don't mind dark stories, I just like to have a little light at the end of the tunnel.

Well, I have to say a couple of words in defense of this manga, if you don't mind.
1. Many of events in this manga are purposed to show people's cruelty and indifference to each other. Also xenofobia.
2. Don't want to spoiler... but light at the end of the tunel have appeared closer to the end of the story. By the way, it started to feel boring for me from this point

All that came to my mind was "I have no mouth and I must scream" but simply because I don't like hopeless stories like this one

Hopelessness and despair are the main themes, the core of this story! And they are done very well, in my opinion. What I didn't like in this story, was some technical unrealism.

No problem from me. I know the series was fairly well received and has a big following, so I know some people enjoy it. Just for me, I didn't want to wade through all the stuff I didn't like just to get to an ending. Mostly a personal thing.

I've recalled one more story, which upset me. It is not sadistic at all, just very, very stupid and a bit disgusting. It made me upset mostly because it was from the book, which several people adviced as a book with very beautiful love stories. So, I wasn't prepared for being disgusted at all...

The story was about the woman with vaginismus and her husband. The author have stated that they couldn't have sex because of this illness of her. So they never "shared marital bed", and only kissed and hugged each other.
I was already confused at this point. Because... yes, this illness prevent people from doing classic sex, but... you know... They both had tongues and hands with all fingers at their places. Also they could buy some sex toys to help (I dunno, isn't it really NOT obvious for anyone? (－‸ლ) ). But no, but they didn't guessed to caress each other with fingers, mouths or sex toys for... twenty years (!!!) (◕_◕) Just kissed...
But... ok, I've continued to read, despite of my confuse. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
One day the woman have noticed a young teenage boy, who looked alike her husband, on the street. She have tracked him down, and found out the house, where he lives. I will omit boring details, and will move on to the point where she have discovered, that this boy was the son of her husband, who had another "family" and "wife" for all these twenty years (!!!).
I was just... ugh. (≧︿≦) If he really was too stupid to make other kinds of sex, besids classical... or wanted to have classical sex too much... why he never tried to explain his situation to his wife? So they could... you know, establish open relationship? ¯_(ツ)_/¯ Or, maybe, just break up and remain a friends, if she wouldn't agree to it... But no. Instead he have desided to cheat on her for twenty damn years... during twenty damn years he have lied to his "beloved" wife.
So I was just... ok. I see, this story is about a hypocrite asshole. Not that I've expected such a story from a book about "beautiful love stories", but ok. I've continued to read to see, how will this situation be resolved.
The husband has hired a therapist for his wife, to help her to deal with her anger on him and mental problems, which it caused. The therapist started to proof her that her husband actually loved her and wanted her only good all this time. 0_o And he hided his relationships with a second wife because he didn't want to upset her.
I was: ooook... this story is about two hypocrite assholes - a husband, who lies to his wife for twenty years and about a therapist, who brainwashes his patients and tells them bullshit in favor of the one who pays the money. So - I've understood, - this is a cynical story.
Believe me, I really have nothing against cynical stories and asshole characters! At the end, my own characters are assholes and my own story is pretty cynical! I just... didn't expect it from such a book. So, ok, I've re-tuned my expectations and continued to read.
And... do you know, how has it ended? The wife have "understood" that her husband is a good guy and went to say him how she loves him and how she appreciates his love to her... but - ah, oh! - at this exact moment he've gotten a heart attack because of his soul feelings! So, according to the author's words, the woman had "understood" that he loved her, too late. Eventually, she have decided to keep her love for him in her heart forever and raise his children with his "second wife". This was the end.
At this moment I've eventually lost my patience. (ノ ゜Д゜)ノ ︵ ┻━┻
Why he had a heart attack in such an exact moment? Is it just a cheap, unrealistic method to make his wife and a reader to feel sorry to him? Why the author couldn't make me to feel sorry for him in a more clever way?! There are so many possible ways to make the reader understand an asshole character better and feel empathy for them!.. but no, not in this cheap story. And... why the narrator is so clearly sure that her husband loved her? And why the second wife of an asshole always was ok with whole this situation?
What. The. Fuck. Just. Happened?

I'm sorry and fully understand that this may seems funny, or hypocritical, considering my own writings... but, nevertheless, I should admit, that I've gotten a butthurt from this "love story". ¯_(ツ)_/¯

oh man nothing frustrates me in a book more than a cheating partner because like...Just break up then. What the fuck is wrong with people. If there's kids and a house the separation will probably go over a lot better if you part amicably rather than when the other person finds out their life of however many years was a lie. Gosh...

I also don't think "I was drunk it was an accident" is ever a good reason coz like I'm finnish and we've been known to be an alcoholic bunch and I have sometimes tasted quite a bit of the ol fermented juice but it has never magically compelled me to fuck anyone.

Why don't stories with assholes as the main characters just accept their assholes, instead of trying "They have a Troubled SOOOOOUUUUULLL!!!!", bullshit. At least the former can be entertaining rather than annoying.

Probably mentioned it several times already here but Handmaiden's Tale was pure trash. It reeked of all the problems of 2nd wave feminism and also tried to hamfist itself into a romance novel simultaneously ripping off much better dystopian novels. They even had a rape scene the author tried desperately to defend as "not real rape" like what the actual fuck.

Now its becoming popular again cause its bashing the patriarchy and christian fundies... but seriously it is awful. If you want a good dystopian novel talking about modern issues just read 1984.

Any love story where abusive behaviour is presented as romantic just pisses me off.

Outlander and Twilight are two examples. Basically, they treat relationship abuse as "cute" and "protective". Also, Bella is the worst example of a female character I've ever seen, and that whole "imprinting on a baby" bit in Twilight just disgusted me.
In Outlander he BEATS her, and she still fawns over him. I don't know why people think Jamie Fraser is hot- maybe in the TV show, I don't know, but he's horrible in the book. He treats Claire terribly (even beating her with a belt) and the writer is just like "that's how it was at the time." That doesn't justify it at all!

To a lesser extent, it also annoys me (as a whovian) that the writer claimed that her Jamie was based off Jamie McCrimmon from Doctor Who.

Wow, I was not expecting a response two years later! But yeah I get you. Then again Non-Con and abusive relationships are still really popular in literature. Addison Cain is a great example: a very poor writer and bad person (for reasons unrelated to her writing) she only uses rape or abuse in her erotica. It's kind of... gross.

I personally just don't get anyone who would write that or buy that or Idk why books would be your first option for that niche in the first place. I mostly read for the character development or worldbuilding now. Things like power fantasy-- of any kind but specifically sexual-- are kind of not my thing. Recently I've just wished that writers would write good relationships in general. Not literal bottom-feeding.

I tend to not really seek out atrocious media because I learned that it's OK to stop reading if something is not your cup of tea.

However, I didn't really know about that is middle school and thought I had to finish books. I remember picking out a book called The Adventures of the Blue Avenger.

I thought it was going to be about a teen writing a comic book but no...it's not really about that all all. It's just some dumb kid who creates an OC and wants to be a "hero" and wants everyone to call him by his OCs name. Other then that it has nothing to do with comic books except all the curse words being censored like @#$% this. Except for one chapter where they talk about "shit" and "crap". It's mostly just a teenage drama about MC getting the girl, doing school stuff, and going to a depressing wedding at a prison. I also remember a weird pro-gun undertone to it, which is weird topic for a teen drama.

I remember throwing the book against the wall when I finished it.

I read ''Sunset Park'' some years ago and that book was so off. It's a mystery book about a 28 year old guy fleeing after he caused the death of his step brother. I remember none of that as it had nothing to do with why I was mad about this book. In the book he meets a really young college girl. It was a very creepy relationship. The guy visited his dad once with her and the dad said ''He couldn't keep his hands off of her.''

That's what offensive means it's use is inherently subjective. it's been over two years since it's this thread was made so my thoughts have changed somewhat but the part of the title that says "that has made you upset" means subjectivity is implied glad you figured that on your own chief.

It's not as bad as some of the examples here and it's a particularly big author, but Uprooted by Naomi Novik. Well written, but... CW for content up to halfway through the book which is when I just got uncomfortable and dropped it.

I get it. Medieval times. Dark fantasy. Women protagonist. I GET IT, the first scene that comes to mind wasn't really my problem.
My problem is that the story hands over the information that the wizard is 100+ years old several times, to the point you commit to heart that this is a semi-immortal old man that looks young, then because of the super necessary magic sex power, I need to witness with my two eyes him kissing the 18 year old protagonist.
Ok, that was stupid, surely, they're not gonna escalate next time -- they do.
I don't know if anything changes later or it's presented as horrible after the fact (because during the fact the author sure doesn't). I don't care. This is the last time I pick up a series based on TV Tropes pages that just happily gloss over details they don't like.

I think the reason I'm so happily in webcomics and some webnovels right now is that we're respectful of the content we're about to hand over. Most people use CWs, they warn before the pages if it's particularly bad, you're always prepared. I hate getting slapped with questionable shit, just because I accepted the other dark aspects like death or cosmic horror.

I wouldn't call it atrocious but Bittersweet Candy Bowl is the biggest example of a trainwreck one can bring up, it manages to shit the bed with almost every new page posted yet you cannot stop reading. (a few spoilers)

It cares so little about it's drama yet at the same time bloats them up when necessary for the plot.

Lucy's suicide, Augustus' childhood rape trauma, Daisy's almost rape trauma (by Augustus), whatever the fuck Paulo's deal of the week is, Abbey's abuse, everything to do with Alejandro and most egregious of all, Mike's current role in the story; They're all handled so piss poorly.

But even more poorly handled are the main characters, Lucy is a poorly done tsundere/mary sue, Daisy is a fake cunt, Paulo is a manwhore and Mike is a cockwaffle. (Mike is my favourite character btw.)

I wonder if it'll ever end...
