Read this if you think you aren’t good enough

A few days ago I made a thread saying I’d read and review any comics or novels that were posted. It was an interesting experiment and I haven’t read everything that was posted yet, but there was something that bothered me.

Many creators seem to think their work isn’t good enough. Specially comic creators, who tend to be a bit hard on their art. It made me sad to see that some people are not confident about their stories. Of course I know where they are coming from. We are always our worst critics. But creating a webnovel or a comic is difficult. There’s a lot of preparation involved and, with comics, it’s not only about the plot but also about the art. So if you are reading this and you don’t feel like your work is good enough, be a bit kinder to yourself. Of course there is always room for improvement but you should appreciate how far you have come. After all, if you don’t like your work, who will?

I posted this on discord, but decided to post here as well because I think as many people as possible should read it.

Personally, I love receiving comments and suggestions to help me improve, I'm new to comics and the more advice I receive (being respectful of course) I will apply it to my life, without any problem. I do this for my own benefit because sometimes you need someone to tell you that something you do can be improved and you may not realize your own mistakes. So I appreciate the opportunity that you give us to be honest.

To be honest, I do feel the same thing. I was quite worried about what others think in a negative way. And I hate myself because after the comic with 3 pages had been posted, I stop working on it for 6 or 7 months I think because of work and had no motivation to continue after the worries about my stories and plot. So, I decided to continue getting it done after reading the comments where people appreciate my work.

I wish I get more positive comment in my manga, Gemmoner, as it motivates me to get it done.

Well, that happened to me many years ago and sometimes, it does happen from time to time but over the years, I got it more channeled down.

Let me throw in the quote the kicked my passion back:

Boy, did that resonate to me big time! It's not like I'm an Andy Warhol fan and my artwork still needs a lot of work but fuck it, get it done.

Getting things done with what you have right now is better than getting things perfect. Get advices, feedbacks here and there but ultimately, focus on you. Use the ones that are helpful to you and leave out the ones that don't matter much to you. Be thankful and kick ass!!!

If you say about your art, "man, it sucks!!" So what if it sucks create another one and move on. Work on it everyday. Whether it's good or it sucks, it doesn't matter... Move forward. You will eventually improve without you noticing.

Those are the mindset that I have right now.

For me, at least, I used to kind of put myself down when talking about my work but it was more of a false modesty thing instead of actually thinking my work sucks. I do actually think I'm hot shit, but I'm also terrified of being accused of being arrogant.

I'm sure most of you aren't like this and put yourself down because you actually don't think you're good enough, in which case plz listen to OP.

But if you're like me, then let me just say: if someone accuses you of being arrogant, own it. There's literally nothing wrong with being arrogant as long as you're not putting other people down in the process, and it's dumb that society stigmatizes it so much. Even if you're overestimating yourself, who cares? You're not hurting anyone, except possibly yourself a little bit if you notice your actual skill level and feel disappointed. Think and feel however you want, and screw anyone who tries to shame you for it :]
