While there are challenges that comes with allowing free reigns, we have given ourselves enough freedom in the length of each episode, to steer the story a bit in a direction that allows for some progression. It also helps that Readers are not likely to vote on things that are boring or wouldn't be fun/attractive to see.
While we haven't planned any particular story for the comic, with the beginning of the comic taking place after the Hero has defeated the final boss, we have pre-decided a lot of things about the world that the readers will explore through the Hero, so that even if the Hero's actions are unpredictable, there will always be something interesting to encounter.
There's also the fact that the readers only control the main character and his actions, so we can still use secondary characters, and the world around him, to steer the story in case the Hero isn't progressing much.
