Scroll to Page reformat- Do you think it looks good?

I remember being so confused as to how people reformat from scroll comics to page format because that isn't too common.

However, after seeing what that looks like through how lore Olympus is formatted I can see a lot of the struggle trying to make all these mismatched panels work together.

There are some eeehhh pages, and some that look pretty good!

I think it's very hit or miss. It's still a new skill set that needs more work for sure. And it feels a bit wasteful no? All of that empty space, but what can we do.

I've thought maybe if they changed the book dimensions to something longer it will fix some issues, but I'm not sure, it hasn't been done yet.

that's what I thought. There's pages where there's a ton of empty space and weird composition because the panels different shapes and sizes

Yeah! I haven't seen anyone talk about the crazy amount of gutter space just to make the panels fit! I really am hoping someone tries making the long format book

They could make vignette illustrations to fill up those empty spaces, or just throw in a soft color or subtle background pattern which makes it looks more decorative but not distracting. Maybe it will take time and effort and money, but I think fans would like that too.

But indeed, superior master race page format comics do not have this problem.

I think it depends on what editor is putting together the panels.
For example, White Blood's printed format looks way better, in my opinion.

yeah that looks way better. I think part of the issue with LO is that they have to make space for the text bubble juttig out of the page. I'm wondering if she merged the bubble with the drawing layer so it's impossible to rearrange the page for a different format lol

damn, that's reformatted really well! If I didn't know White Blood was originally in webtoon format I would have assumed it was originally print format.

This exact thing is why I draw my pages as pages first and then spread them out a bit I asked Shazleen Khan, who makes a pretty popular comic on Tapas called BUZAA! how the print version looked so good and was told that the pages were drawn for print first and then cut up and spaced out for web.

Making comics for long scroll is really cool, but if printed books are a big part of your plans, it's easier to cut up a print page for scroll than to jigsaw together long scroll panels to fit on a print page nicely.

On the Lore Olympus example, it looks like they got very anxious about the panels and text being constrained to the Safety Zone, including in places where they could have gone for full bleed. The small panels don't really capture the cinematic feeling of the original.

I think those could work-- they just need to set the paper size large enough. Like 10 inch paper height or more so the panels are large our naked eyes can focus on them individually and not all together. Print size does make a different in this case.

This type of formatting don't look well on web-view though.
