Texas was originally named Callie, but I just liked the name Texas so much I decided to change it, and make Callie a nickname since her surname is "Callaway." (also, Texas Callaway-Cruz just sounds right IMO)

I'd originally thought of making Chili filipino, because I was working with a Pinoy artist earlier this year, but I ultimately decided to make him Malaysian (I already have a Pinoy comic artist in a different story anyway.)

However, I still imagined him having a spanish-influenced surname, and that's how I ended up creating his family's whole backstory about moving to Panama, and then to Texas, USA.

Kattar hates filth. He can't sleep in a dirty house, and would just about lose his mind if he ever had to wear a pair of shoes with a hole in them because all the city dirt would get all over his feet. (fortunately? Alicia is the one who grew up wearing worn out shoes and she can take it much better than he can)
