if your interested, it's just a circle background scaled down (to 2%), set to hard mix and fill to around 20% or 50%, depends on your taste

The Ben Day process is a printing and photoengraving technique for producing areas of gray or (with four-color printing) various colors by using fine patterns of ink on the paper. It was developed in 1879 by illustrator and printer Benjamin Henry Day Jr. (son of 19th-century publisher Benjamin Henry Day). The process is commonly described in terms of Ben Day dots, but other shapes can be used, such as parallel lines or textures

IMO if you're going to use it, use it consistently.

this is only for the gradient background, the complex backgrounds stay spotless

I think the benday helps the characters stand out a bit more, I say use it.

I like the effect in the first panel, makes the scene more dynamic to me.
In the second one I don't find it necessary, makes the background darker
