So I'm a novelist at heart. But I've been seeing everyone's beautiful comics here on tapas, and it keeps inspiring me to do more than just write. I itch to get drawing again, like I used to.
Problem is: I don't think that I can draw worth beans. But the idea won't leave me alone.
So here's my question: should I even bother trying to draw a comic? Is it even worth it? How do I get my art skills to the point where I even can?

Well just start drawing man, you don't have to show the comic to anyone. Everyone's a beginner at first. But
is it worth it? Probably not tbh, but what is? I mean why write your story? Is that worth it, the time the energy?

But you do it anyway, why? Cause you need to tell your story, it's not enough for it to just exist in abstraction in your mind it has to exist in reality.

Regarding art skills, there's no bar for satisfaction artists are never happy and all ways trying to improve.

If you're seeking approval to draw you've got it from me, no one's stopping you only yourself is preventing to drawing.

And you can also start small. Your first project doesn't have to be an epic. It can be 10 pages, or just a few panels.

I say start with using inspiration from comics you read but simplified. Not copying the styles per se, but doing similar methods to the creator like limited colors.

Also helps to practice woth different art programs or art supplies to see where your strengths and weaknesses lie. Looking at beginner tutorials definitely help.

No one comes out the womb drawing Mozart, but we do learn step by step at our own pace.

  1. Yes. If there's an itch, go for it. 2. Depends how you define "worth" I guess. In any case, it will always worth it to yourself somehow. On the contrary, you might grow frustrated not giving it a try. The hollow feeling of missed opportunity (you have a drive and an idea, that's a lot already). 3. Depends. Most artists are never satistied with their work anyway, so it's a quest...

Just do it man. I mean rn we all have if anything, it's time

An other option is to go for a novel, but also provide illustrations.
It can help make you comfortable with drawing illustrations, have an idea of how long it takes you etc. without HAVING to make them if you don't have time/don't feel like.

That's what I would have done if I had known how time consuming making a comic would be for a beginner. There is so much to learn for making a comic, other than just drawing. This being said, I don't regret choosing the comic path either. It's two good paths, I believe.

If it inspires you so much and you want to get invested on the idea of make a comic, go ahead.

It may not work out the way you wanted at first (Which I know how that really feels ;_;) it is a start.

The longer you continue, the better you're getting.

Everything takes time.
