One of my protagonists nearly always wears a mask. He's worn three different designs over the course of five chapters, although I think the most recent, wolf-inspired one is my favourite. He makes them himself, and they are carved from wood and painted, with leather, fur and other materials for additional decoration.
In his native region, hunters make them to honour certain kills, and wear them at festivals and other important events. They're not sacred, but they're an important part of a hunter's 'formal wear', and having lots of masks on display in their home is a sign of a skilled hunter. They are never passed down from parent to child, and at death the masks are cremated with the hunter. In other regions, his people are often stereotyped as dangerous savages, and when portraying them in works of art, plays etc. the masks are used both as an identifier and to make them seem less human.
In wearing a mask wherever he goes, my character might claim that it's a matter of pride, and at one point in the comic he notes that his physical features make it impossible to hide his heritage regardless of what he wears, but it wouldn't be too hard to argue that he enjoys the distance it creates between himself and others. Even his own people would call him eccentric for wearing the mask everywhere.
