I don't know if this is ALWAYS a problem.
The way I see it, if it's been done before in a similar way just mix it up a bit. If you get these comments a lot from different people it says more about your work than it does about them. There's nothing wrong with admitting your work is similar to someone else's. You can either go with it or change it.
Sometimes these comparisons are half-baked though. I had several people mistake OC art of my character Arkade for My Hero Academia fanart, purely because his hair was green. His hair wasn't even the same shade of green. It looked really different. My conclusion was that they were just the types of people that make an anime their entire personality and project it on everything they see. There are quite a few people like that. My Hero has a lot of fans of this type.
Haven't got anything like that yet. If they say it reminds them of this or that, depending. I'll admit that oh hey those were one of my inspirations and of course is influenced into it in some shape or form. Though if they say it's basically this.. I'll honestly take it as a grain of salt because sometimes you'll never know it's some kid wanting to be a troll or if they're genuinely being honest.
Can either respond or don't at all :x
I guess for me to put.. So it's basically furries...? I don't know XD hmhm is it??
Not a comic I have published yet but I told my ex back when we were together about the concept and storyline for a fantasy comci I want to make, here's a [based on memory] example of how that went:
Me: [insert long talk about the plot and the characters] and so they go to this lava/fire esque kingdom to meet the prince in that kingdom, and he's-
Him: Oh so it's like in adventure time
me: What
Him: Yeah, like the fire kingdom and flame princess in adventure time
Sometimes seeing a comparison between characters or elements of a story are fine with me, but other times it feels like even if it's not on purpose that you're being smashed with the "you're not original just a copy" hammer
My comic's in it's infancy so I've only had one of these so far, but I've had a single "this gives off strong Fairy Tail vibes" comment xD Which is pretty fair on the surface level, honestly. There's talk of magic and they work for a (Treasure Hunting) guild. I'm also a FT fan so I don't mind too much xD
But realistically they're not really that similar imo. FT is very "typical" shonen where they take high power characters and keep clashing them against higher and higher power opponents. The whole thing's a grand spectacle of explosions and trading blows, and pulling out trump cards. It's like comfort food and I appreciate that ^^
My comic is kind of the opposite: all of the characters (including the eventual antagonist) have fairly limited amounts of power, and notable flaws/weaknesses that they have to work with. I focus more on thinking outside the box to solve problems with what you have when raw power isn't available, or even isn't the best solution. A lot of my inspiration was actually drawn from games I've played this year that use different kinds of elemental combination systems xD

My comic rarely get these comparations, but when they happen, people usually compare it to One Punch Man for the absurd humor (Main character is a rock) and having a protagonist that is completely OP
But i would say is more like a mix of Sakamoto Desu Ga, One Punch Man, and a mix of many shonen, having Plank from Ed, Edd and Eddy as a protagonist
Oh, how I can understand it. Recently on Instagram I had a comment saying: "Kingdom Hears Rip-off?", like with that Question mark like to make it sound an innocent question when it's blatantly an accusation. Not even on the first page where you can see the Dreamer's key shape, but at the latest update totally not showing it (Except for the promotional image at the end with Alfredo wearing his Jacket.).
Is Alfredo wearing a Jacket and Holding the key (That has more metaphorical and Sci-fi meaning than magic), the only thing that makes a totaly unrelated story, A RIP-OFF of something COmpletely different!?
It can be seen from both the Prologue and the "DeRezolutor Family" story that the premise is not that one, the characters are not those, and the Plot (That still has to be slowly introduce) is not similar to that! I mean, why some people are so lazy to jump to conclusions, leave a comment that might be damaging if others see it (I've deleted it because I don't want to risk misinformation to destroy things before they get really started), and don't even care to see the previous pages and the Website!? For many of you I might getting this a bit "Exagerated" but to me it feels personal, as it is a Series dealing with Traumas, and it's very personal, and I've worked on its concept and character for 8 years before setting down the final draft, and see people just take a little detail and jump already to say "tHiS iS a BoOtLeG oF tHaT sErIeS yadda yadda yadda..." just makes a vein pop, Like, I can't even make a reference/Tribute to a series I've liked, basing just ONE thing on that, but with a complete differtent background and function (If it's a tool)!?
I mean, I don't mind when people say "It gives a Neverending story vibe" or similar things, because It's nice, and quite is what I expect people to feel it like (Before realizing the twist), I mean, it's different saying "It gives me vibes" from "IT A RIP-OFF"!
Just don't let those comment affect you, YOU KNOW what you are doing, writing and drawing, don't let outsider shape your opinion on your thing, you'll have people who will appreciate it anyway, for one person lost, three more come. keep it in mind!
Yikes, I've quite vented, but now I feel better.
"Red Dragon" is basically:
- Black Cat (By Natsuki Takeya)
- Tokyo Ghoul
- Fairy Tail (I've only seen the first season and only know of what happens through memes and my friends talking about it. But I know at some point my MC will get compared to Natsu even though I created this way before Fairy Tale even started.)
Been there. Happened a couple of times...
To reinforce this quotation, I would like to share this. Give it a look!
And back to the topic: As artists we can't control everyone's perspective or opinion. Internet "educates" more people to see more stuff/improve visual library. It's also easy to comment with a comparison to other artists... So, don't bother with it too much and keep doing what you like the way you want!
EDIT: Aw, jesus. This thread is 2 years old! Sorry for bumping it, lol.
