As an LGTBIQ+ author in the world of comics, I’ve learned that the real struggle is not always about what we tell, but from where and how freely we’re allowed to tell it.
There’s a lot of talk about diversity in visual storytelling today. And yes, some doors have opened. But that openness often comes with conditions: filtered content, editorial decisions made by people who don’t share our lived experiences, and unequal access to the industry for trans, non-binary, racialized creators or those from peripheral backgrounds.
I’ve been lucky enough to publish two comics and have the support of my publishers, who —beyond any label— have seen and accompanied me as an author. And that, in a sector where queerness is often only valued when it sells, is worth more than any empty slogan.
Authentic representation doesn’t start on the page — it starts behind it. With those who write, draw, edit, publish, and distribute.
🤝 That’s why today I want to make a call:
If you care about diversity, support LGTBIQ+ creators.
Buy their work. Recommend it. Share it.
Not just so our stories can be heard, but so we can keep telling them from within — with autonomy and dignity.
Build community. Build power. Make this more than a trend — make it a transformation.
The revolution is not just what we tell. It’s how, and with whom, we build it.
