TAPAS MEDIA launches STUDIO TAPAS division - The Beat

Tapas has launched a division of the company devoted to developing its original content and I think that's super fantastic. The site is growing at a rapid pace and I can't wait to see how it develops over the next few years.

Also, super congratulations to Magical Boy for getting optioned for media adaptations! Most stories that are optioned don't end up as movies/series/etc., but I'm really optimistic about Magical Boy for some reason.

Will there be anime too? Because it would be awesome if both Webtoon and Tapas start making anime adaptations.

I suppose it would sound awfully bragging of me to mention my novel Dead Souls Doing the Samba has been optioned... It didn't happen because of Tapas (which would have been totally cool) although, in a way it might have because I'd made an announcement on social media about putting it up on Tapas and was in contract talks a couple weeks later.

Let's hope both of us go beyond options!

Tapas won't be making anime (as far as I'm aware) but they can get their stories optioned by larger media companies, which means those companies have the rights for some period of time (several years) to develop and produce movies, TV, games, etc. using the property. Studios option all sorts of stuff they MAY want to make and the lucky stuff actually gets made! If Axe Cop can get a cartoon, I feel like Magical Boy can too.

I think it would be fabulous for a bunch of stuff from Tapas to get optioned and definitely made by other media. There are so many super talented people here who don't go the regular publishing route for a variety of reasons so it's as if this is a whole new fertile field to pick from.

Magical Boy is a really smart first pick. It's just the right mix of popular, accessible and catering to under-represented trans people while also being widely enjoyable by cis people too. I could see it being a hit.

I'm guessing it'll probably be animated, because the effects budget would need to be so high if it was live action. I looked into the studio they're working with, and it seems they have links to "Dragon Prince" so a similar approach seems probable.

Unsurprisingly being somebody working in similar genre tags (my comic has the same genre tags in a different order hahaha) I'm keen to see it succeed!

I can't wait to see how Tapas will use this to bury small creators even further lnto obscurity.

I guess it's just another form of Creator Incubator? Anyway it's great, it would be nice to see more comics that were chosen from the original creators of Tapas site, not just pre-existing foreign comics that were bought from China and Korea.

Well, I guess my 500 subscribers from one book does kinda pale in comparison to the 14,000 (!!!) your main comic has, but I don't feel particularly "buried" by the big creators just yet. Tapas certainly is no Wattpad where story discovery is literally impossible for anyone not already popular, and that's a very good thing. I've found quite a lot of under-the-radar stories just browsing the site, and even the recommendation sections have helped me find some nice stuff from time to time.

I guess there's a chance that free/user uploaded stories will become a lot less of a priority for Tapas if its Studio Tapas work, but I do think those stories will remain a backbone to keep the company's library strong. After all, they are debuting just 30 Tapas Originals next year according to the press release--that's not nearly enough to compete with other web comic and web fiction services by itself. They'll be very wise to continue promoting non-originals stories whenever they can.

Maybe you haven't been here for long, but the visibility and exposure of smaller comics has been on a downward spiral for years now.
I just feel that small creators keep getting kicked to the side more and more.

Tapas would need to hire and make a whole animation division for that. And as awesome as it would be to see an anime adaptation of any of Tapas originals get its own show. Getting a team of animators, video editors, and voice actors is easier said than done.

I think that this presents good opportunities for creators. I have already sent in a submission with hopes of becoming a writer who will support other artists, and their projects and then hopefully as I gain more experience be able to then present some of my own original works.

I can't wait to see where this goes and how it will expand in the future.

They could always just license their stuff to other studios, like webtoon does.

@carloswebcomic makes the key point here... Which is covered in the press release...this is only happening to properties that are "exclusive content wholly-owned by Tapas Media".

I'm happy for any creator who personally benefits from this but it's just another reason for Tapas to utilize it's resources to promote certain content more that others.
