I have more than one comic in progress at the moment but had to put two of them on hold due to me not having enough time to work on them while still reliably updating my most popular comic. Inking takes up 80% of the time it takes me to finish an episode so it would definitely be a big help to be able to send off my penciling, get it inked, and then only have the coloring and lettering to do.

I'm not sure how I'd even go about hiring someone for this though. Would I be expected to pay them per episode/page? Per panel? An hourly rate? In one of my comics the episodes are fairly short (5-10 panels), but in another it can be 20+ panels.

Does the genre matter? Working on a slice of life story might be easier than working on an action-heavy one for some people. Also, one of my stories is BL, which some artists might not be comfortable with.

Basically, I want to have an idea of the amount of money I need to spend before I start actively searching for someone to hire.

I rarely do just inks for comic work, but I have inked other people's sketches before for pay.

I charge on a per-panel basis to accommodate for scroll comics.

$10-15/panel depending on complexity. If your page had 6 panels, then that's $60 minimum.

Edit: genre-wise, if you are offering pay, it would attract more people regardless of BL or action. Most posts here don't even offer pay for work.

That seems reasonable. It's a little out of budget for me right now, but at least I know its feasible even if I have to wait and save up some more. Thank you!

Well, at least you know my and Joanne's prices! There might be people out there who do inks for lower, but then that's where you expect quality to drop as well.

youd pay them per page, and you should ask them their rates. soooooome haggling is acceptable, but dont push it.

this is a good guide for industry averages

Okay, I'm thinking I might go through with requesting an inker soon, but I'll make my budget very clear and just see if I have any takers. The level of quality would of course concern me, but if I can't find anyone decent that means I have to wait until I can afford better.

You already have a +1 just for asking first about the rate

I'll be looking forward for that request

Just a quick note on how vague your pages are. If you're sending sketches to be inked then GG, but if you're sending pretty solid pencil sketches and just need them lined over in ink that can be changed to black or colors or the like, that's very different demand for the artist you're hiring.
