Final Fantasy doesn't even compare because they also get hella crazy with elemental spirits and generally does stick to a theme - the Four Fiends are all weird beasts of folklore, the summons are generally gods of really crazy mythological beasts with a few extras thrown in, the Espers/Lucavi are all based on previous villains of the series, etc. And even then, they could've kept the out of theme creatures if they were enjoyable to watch, and apparently all get mad and crazy because of the inbalance, but let's see -
1) Sylph knows of the events that surpassed. I guess because it's mischievous it doesn't even bother telling the whole story to Elsa???
2) Salamander is treated as this fox fire type of thing, but it's the most well structured of the spirits because it's really just an animal that doesn't know what it's doing.
3) The golems just kill things. Even though they have full ability to go and kill the thing that drove them mad in the first place. But they also like their daytime naps because I don't know.
4) The Kelpie tries to kill Elsa who's you know the reincarnation of their boss. Unlike the rest, its domain is also everywhere, considering it's the only one that's out in the sea to begin with. Also when it gets frozen it's just okay with being told what to do.
5)Here we go. Elsa is the Quintessence. The Quintessence before that was.... ?????? It's shown as a glowing sigil in the sky and I was convinced her mom would've given up her power to save everyone which is why she's mortal and passed her abilties, but then they have their gotcha moment in that it also freezes Elsa if she doesn't solve the problem ha ha are you surprised already at this twist. So what it was before? It's a voice, but then the voice turns out to be Elsa too, and supposedly the being existed before to be an island of myth in the first place. Single most easy to solve paradox that just gets put there for a cheap disheartening sequence.
I'm also unsure what's the point of taking away the magic from the indigenous tribe when their leader gets killed, and not give it back once the issue is solved. Sucks to be you ha ha Kelpie is going to drown you and you don't even know why...??
