Tapas VS Webtoon: which is better?

Hi guys! I have my comic posted on both Tap/Web, and I’m here to give you pros and cons of both websites.

Tapas is great in terms of artist connecting to their audience. You got the wall announcements, ink-givings, and a forum to connect you to other artists. It used to be very niche and user friendly to new-coming comic artists, but lately I noticed they push out of of the “mahwa” comics to the front page to compete with Webtoon. I hope we will get back the old interface of Tapas in terms of pushing out more indie artists and unique comics.

As for Webtoon, I see that the artist could only communicate with their audience through the comments section. As of 2023, Webtoon incorporates “artist’s wall” like Tapas, but again; there’s a disassociation because Webtoon never used that feature before. Also, Webtoon doesn’t have a forum. Webtoon caters to a more mature audience and most of its users/web artists are in Korea.

I love both, but I have to give it more to Tapas for giving artists more creative freedom and easier path to reach to their target audience. I hope you found this post helpful in terms of navigation for your comic and where to post! 🥰🥰🥰

Okay so I personally I have a problem with webtoon because, since I'm in spain, it only let me upload to the spanish version of the app, so for now tapas

Well, this is a battle that has been going on for ages: Tapas or Webtoon?

In my personal experience I'd say Tapas, mainly because it has more tools for creators and offers you the possibility to interact with your audience and other creators (the wall and the forums). You can also rearrange episodes after you posted them, which is not possible on Webtoon. Now, they did implement some features (very recent features) that I didn't like, for example they removed the bell icon and completely changed the inbox. I also very much agree on the fact that they're pushing out premium comics a lot more, which I find quite annoying (as you can see with the new inbox).

Webtoon, on the other hand, is not that creator friendly. It's missing lots basic features like notifications for likes and comments, so if you want to check for them you'll have to click each episode manually. Many things that Tapas already had were also included much later on like the possibility to schedule an episode. The creator's wall and profile is also a relatively recent thing they added and it's quite bad since they should've done it much earlier. Also it doesn't help that you can only edit your profile through the app, which is a shame. Overall, I don't think WT is that great of a platform, at least from an author's pov.

However, I still think one of the best platforms for self-publishing out there is GlobalComix, due to its very creator-friendly approach. I like it a looot more

Wall doesn't work on Tapas app and most of the audience is using the app. Webtoons recently got the wall working in the app, and it works totally fine, except the readers still have to subscribe to it separately, regardless of them already being a reader of your comic.
Tapas is still a somewhat traditional page format friendly, which is nice for some creators. And well, the ink tipping is a great feature.
Honestly right now I don't think one is better than another - they both have good and bad features and there were some problems I've encountered on Tapas and on Webtoons. I use both and I have audience on both, so unless something drastic will happen, I will continue doing so.

I had the same problem trying to get both french and english versions of my comic onto webtoon... It's possible but it's a bit of a pain and some language options aren't available depending on your region for some reason. Like for example I'm not allowed on the korean side of webtoon for despite trying to set my language to korean, but I can change to Spanish, German, French, English, Thai, Traditional Chinese and Indonesian.

To publish on the english version you've got to go to your account language settings and set that to english. You'll only have a predetermined pool of languages to choose from (again, stupid design, but you might have english as an option seeing as I have spanish). Once your account is in english, it'll be like an entirely seperate account, so you won't have your spanish comic on there but you will be able to publish to the english side of the app. You'll then have to ping-pong between the two to work on both versions. Because Webtoon is built as if the different languages are the same platform in different dimentions, you have to hop between them to get anything multilingual done.
