I guess I'm of a weird bunch of people, broken bunch of people.
I've always been taught that self-promotion is, pardon my language, "attention whoring", and must be avoided. That if people like your work, they will praise it and create fan-pages and do other things, and you shouldn't try to emulate or force this. I guess some view it as if you'd been paying artists to draw "fanart" for you, stripping it of the whole "voluntary because I enjoy your work that much!" aspect, which is the entire point of it.
TVTropes is a fan-created and fan-maintained website, so TVTropes page is a popularity milestone that should come on it's own, like receiving a first comment, or first fanart, or first fanfic, or first article about you somewhere, or first r34 smut, or an article on Wikipedia about you that isn't getting deleted, and so on, I guess. Imagine if somebody liked their own comic, commented on their own comic as if they were a fan, drawn a fanart on their own comic as if they were a fan... Feels kinda desperate, maybe pathetic even, doesn't it? Not the same as creating a twitter account to promote your work.
