Forgive me, I have to leave a lot out due to spoilers.

Charlotte is a clone, and thus the only vampire who was born as a vampire and not turned. She was raised by the father who cloned her; a powerful mage who used to serve her 'mother' decades ago.

Her father disappeared about a year before the novel begins, and she's traced his wearabouts to a dangerous clan of mages who he used to be a part of.

Also, the vampire she was cloned from was rather infamous, and she doesn't like to talk about what little she does know.

Princess Treania is the eldest of the emperor's bastard children, born to lady Ellan of House Nuemor, called the lady of Silvercrest. She has seven other half-blood siblings she knows about. Due to her being a bastard she is despised by the royal court.

@Leyelle and @applebun 's characters are so culturally diverse! I'd like to know how you do your research and present those cultures in your work!

I kind of want something similar in my current work. The setting of the story is a fictional city called Buangan that I imagine to be located somewhere in South East Asian (Strongly inspired by Singapore, Malaysia, and a touch of Thailand). I imagine the place to be a new commercialized town with many western investors coming in, hence the characters should be culturally diverse (Though I'm really new with this, so will need a lot of pointers).

The two main characters, Nanami Edward and Michelangelo Drake, has quite a complex background. Edward is adopted by a Japanese marine biologist named Nanami Hisashi. Hisashi had a previous biological son with a woman named Godiva Owens (who is half Filipino and half white though I don't really specify other parts of her genealogy). Hisashi named his biological child, who is Nanami Edwards adoptive older brother, after his favorite thing, Kai (which, in Hawaii, means sea). And when Hisashi adopted Edward (he never married Godiva due to... circumstances), he let Godiva named the baby, and Godiva named him after her father, Edward Owens.

Oh, the Owens are also heads of an assassin group.

Michelangelo Drake is publicly known to be the only son of the director and actress couple named Gregory and Brianna Drake. Gregory is part Italian; Brianna (stage name Brianna Starling, real name Brianna Chia) is Singaporean. But in truth, Angelo is the product of Brianna's affair with the local crime lord and owner of a world-renowned weapon company, Benjamin Larks (I haven't decided his genealogy yet, but he is part Asian).

The story is about Angelo dating Edward while their families are, secretly, enemies.

Google, Wikipedia and news articles from specific countries is how I get information on those places. also videos from Youtubers and such from those places and travel vlogs. since my characters are American born and so am I, they don't cause me much trouble, but anytime I need cultural details, those methods are my go-tos. I also live in Latin America, so that helps broaden my knowledge as well

Basically the same things as @Leyelle does, except of course I have a different cultural background so I don’t have the same knowledge. In the story I’m currently working on, nearly all the characters are Asian and all of them live in Asia, which is a completely unfamiliar place for me (the closest my family ever came to Asia was my great-grandmother being born in Beijing for diplomatic reasons, lol.) so I need to do ALL the research and then verify it so I know that whatever I read off Wikipedia is actually true. I just research every single detail, use different people’s POV’s (locals and tourists) and even media like comics or movies from the countries in question.
For the two characters I presented though, I didn’t even need that much research because yeah, cultural background and I’ve thought many times about how I could present these cultures, and basically what I do is research the simple things. Words of endearment, swear words, superstitions, traditional food, holidays… all of these can make a character feel “alive” while also representing their culture.

Melly explains her own family history in the bonus episode, but she didn't mention the fact that her dad was Mexican. So she's a quarter Ashkenazi Jew, a quarter African american, half Mexican.

Melissa: Okay, so my family is not Jewish by religion - Grammy and mother and sisters and me. My grammy is Jewish by like ancestry stuff and she was raised Jewish by religion growing up, but she gave that up because of a whole bunch of drama about her family cutting ties with her when she married my grampy. He was African-American. I’m a tri-racial girly. My great-grandparents weren’t cool with my grammy’s decision and it was a mess so she kind of just ditched the whole religion when they disowned her.

Kumamoto Setsune was born in a Daimyese village. When she was an infant, the village was raided and burned to the ground by Verdin Crusaders. She was only saved because a woman called Resonare Dei saved and adopted her. She spent most of her life with them as well as the director at a theatre where she worked. They eventually all vanished. Setsune was then taken in by a group who would be called the Year of Fools. They were like a third family to her, or second if she even counts the parents she never knew. They all either vanished, retired, went mad, or died. Some time latte, Setsune was working at a brothel, which she'd hoped would be her new family, but they fell apart due to economic tensions. Now she's travelling to Rem, hoping to find a new family for herself.

Bard (full name Isambard Flaherty Fox)'s mother, Bridget, is Irish--an immigrant to Northern England. His father, Roger, is English, and been rising in the world, but he can't shake his working-class background, no matter how he changes his accent or what clothes he wears. They aren't married to each other (Roger has a wife); Bard and his sister Cassandra are the result of a long affair, which Bridget was more-or-less coerced into, since she was a subordinate to Roger where they worked. (And this began in 1960, when Bard was conceived.) Bridget, Bard, and Cassandra are (barely) supported by Roger. He owns the house where they live without rent and pays school tuition, but that's it.

Kainoa Harper (Kai) has also has a mixed background. His mother is from Hawaii, very mixed race in the way people from Hawaii often are--a bit of native Hawaiian, a bit of Chinese, a bit of Filipino, a bit European, though mostly Asian and Hawaiian. Her family has deep roots in Hawaii and are very wealthy. Kai's father is white American, from no particular pedigree. They live in San Francisco, though Kai is in Milton in Northern England after getting into one (or two or three) too many scrapes, living with his Uncle Jude. Jude moved to England in the late '60s in some kind of hippie calling to teach music there.
