Hi, how are you ?
Let's talk about writing and storytelling, if you please ! :pencil:

For anyone who is writing a story (comic, novel, movie...), whether you are having trouble coming up with a defined storyline (but for example have a vague story in mind that you keep rewriting) or already have it settled, here is my question for today :

In one word, what would be the core idea behind your story ?

Maybe it can help focus on the right thing in order to define the base storyline and come back to it when you feel like drifting too much in the writing process ! :smiley_cat::sparkles:

I am looking forward to reading your answers about your stories, have a nice day !

Hmm that's a good idea! I think it really does help when you're stuck and need to take a step back to look at the big picture.

I'm torn between the words parenting and obsession for my current novel. Both are important themes that drive the plot forward.

It's pretty easy for my completed novel though - the title itself is the core idea. :joy: It's about the shackles that bind a person - a tattoo that binds self-proclaimed soulmates, or a sense of duty and obligation to the people that binds the Empress Dowager.

Dark Bytes is a short story anthology, so the one word will be quite general. I would say technology is the core idea in all the stories so far.

Thank you very much for your answer and sharing your work !
I find it interesting to see what type of themes and ideas people like to approach in their story and art, and most of all how different creators share the same core idea but come up with really unique voice ! :+1::heart:

Either "borealis" or "travel"

Yeah limiting it to one word makes it really interesting.
You should share your work too and your one-word theme!

Now... I could be a cheeky little bugger here and say 'Ataraxia' as it the word in the title of 'Journey to Ataraxia' and a good tip on the phylosophy I employ in my writing.
But I won't ^^

Instead I chose CAUTERIZE a lot of this story is about wounds, both heroes and villains alike have deep wounds that unable to heal... either phsically, emotionally or mentally... Wounds that were left untreated and neglected for so long they festered and made them sick.

Cauterize is perfect here, because it is not an easy nor painless process... IT BURNS! and even when its for their own good, people will kick and scream! And it's ugly to witness and makes you feel wrong sometimes, but nescessary to deal with some of the more terrible stuff they went through... And will still go through as the story moves on.

I use an analogy for this inside the story called the flame of truth... And without spoiling much, that is exactly what it does... It burns those scars and closes the wounds so that characters can move foward in their search for the ever elusive 'peace of mind' in the title

Retribution
Not apparent for the where the current story has progressed, yet this is the core idea. Shit in the present happens because the past wants its retribution.

I am a newbie here writing the first chapters of my story but the idea was actually in my head for years, shaping. Now thinking about it, it is quite difficult to find the perfect one word with my limited vocabulary.
Still, if I were to go with one that would be foreign.

Mine would be museum. I know that sounds silly, considering it's the title, but I've always loved going to museums. You can have a museum dedicated to just about anything, so the possibilities of what's going on inside is endless. I did have some other inspirations, but the crux was still the magic inside of a museum.

Well for my current webcomic, The Meteor Queen Project, the word would be 'survival'.

Let's see:
conflict
That feels about right.

An interesting idea and fun, whittling your theme down to one word. Unfortunately, as a pantser I often don't know what the theme is until the work is finished. With my current series it's going to take a while. I'm finishing up book 3 and I know it won't be done at least until book 5 or 6.

Hmmmm....
After some thought I think I'll settle on "uncanny."

You wouldn't really be able to tell by reading my work yet though, because of how early on it is.
(Then again, maybe??)

Break

I have the word "broken" in my title also. This theme comes into play in different ways.

Oh you are right, I should too since you are all sharing ! Thank you !

Well...
I had three individual student animated short films where my core ideas were Fantasy (in the meaning of "imagination", not the literary genre) in a story about growing up while keeping a creative mind and heart, Difference in a story about conformism and individuality, and Crossing in a story about facing your fears and entry in the professional world, so again, growing up.

To be honest, starting this thread was also the opportunity to encourage myself to find the word for my long time comic project I keep rewriting again and again but never succeed at taking the risk of sharing it. So... I believe Deliverance could fit to what I want to talk about in this story. I think it is about meeting yourself, becoming aware of what you are and learning being more considerate to yourself.

So... here you go ! My "one word ideas":sparkling_heart:

To abscond.

ennui probably fits it best
