@liaroger - as someone who is a certified BoatGirl (TM) (I used to race small sail dinghies as a kid by myself, and crewed with my parents in larger yacht races, and I've built so many model boats that I could basically free-hand my last ship design), I seriously cannot recommend enough that you try sailing for yourself. There's sailing clubs on any sized body of water pretty much, and in my experience they are very welcoming to new people and will typically have some kind of a "come and learn" program, whether it's paid or free. It's not terribly physically-demanding if you don't want it to be most of the time so you don't need to be a fitness nut to enjoy it (in fact, it's super popular with old folks because of it). But it will give you so much content to write from, and help you understand how sails and boats work.
