Do any of you guys have artsy friends who really just have awful advice/critique on your work?
I play DnD with some friends I've known for many years and one guy paid for art school and thinks himself an absolute master. This person has very poor skills, but I'd never tell him that personally. Anyway, I sometimes will ask the group in our discord over a panel or something I'm working on. Things like, "hey guys, does this look funny", just to get some outside perspective. This guy always responds and I know he's trying to be helpful, but his advice is always very bad, and his understanding of anatomy is pretty atrocious. But since he's paid for art courses and I have not, he frequently will refer to that as to why he's a pro. I just kind of nod and move along.
Just feels like lately he's been... almost bitter, I want to say. He knows my work has gotten more attention as of late and he's been really harsh recently with his opinions. Like my scene with the big blast of electricity, he says looks uneventful and boring and that it needs a shockwave. I try to explain it's not an explosion, it's electric arcs, and I get this lengthy lecture of how nobody is going to find it interesting.
Sucks 'cause we've been friends for five years and I feel like he's really bitter toward me about my art. Always nothing but negative opinions and poor critique.
