Thoughts on Studio Ghibli x Lucas Films Project

They announced that Studio Ghibli is gonna be working with Lucas Films on a project. Personally, I'm super excited. What do you guys want it to be? For me, I want it to be a full-blown trilogy that doubles down on the eastern side of Star Wars.

But realistically speaking, it's probably a short for Star Wars Visions. Still though, I'm wondering if that could lead somewhere if people talk enough.

I love studio ghibli so I'm excited for it. I'm not too big on star wars and not care for it.

But my love of gibili over rides that so I'm cautiously hyped. Personally I feel a nice orginal short film would make me more than hyped but we have to wait and see what will come out.cant wait for the rest of the news lol

I think it would be cool to see a Star Wars story with the art direction of Nausicaa. But I also remember that that film came out in the 80s and not all Ghibli films are from Miyazaki. I think whatever they make will look nice but I am also worried that some people might be disappointed if they are going in with nostalgia goggles on.

As a miserable git my thoughts are,,,
Lucasfilm died when Lucas sold it off to "Disney in name only".
Ghibli died when Takahata died and Miyazaki retired for the 50th time (and seems he's back on his old 2016 project)
I would not be surprised it'll be soulless CG like Earwing.
SW and Ghibli feels like desperation.

I think neither studios are as good as they once was, but I'd be more than happy for Star Wars content in classic Ghibli art style, just cuz it'd be gorgeous.

If Hayao Miyazaki's son is directing the project, my hopes are gonna drop for the collab.. that's it. As much as the man might have potential if he just directed more, I don't want Star Wars to end up being a stepping stone for him. I want the collab to be in good hands with clear and skillful direction of what they wanna do. Especially if it's part of a larger collaborative effort like Visions where other studios are involved. The last thing I want is for the Ghibli short to be the worst of Season 2.

So.. if they get literally anyone else to do the directing, I might still have an interest lol

I'm the opposite. I'm fine with Goro working on it. Especially with Disney's assistance in the CG department. Like not just Disney but Lucasfilm... another CGI powerhouse. Would be a wonderful opportunity to help him nail down the whole animation process since his dad didn't teach him squat lmao. I'd root for him like crazy should he get his mits on the the project. I dunno why but I have so much respect for the dude and the trials he went through. It just sucks because the dude has so much talent. He just needs some guidance. Star Wars would be perfect for him.

I love Studio Ghibli and I was a big Star Wars fan when I was a kid in the 80s but I feel Star Wars
has been overdone for me. I haven´t even seen all the series because it´s just so much now

Oh well... I do hope Disney does think about doing anime movies tho down the line. Like getting other studios like Madhouse. Especially since Warner Bros. is planning on releasing their anime LOTR movie next year (although... that one specializes in CGI..... welp....).

I have the same sentiment with their Diana Wynne Jones Adaptions. Hayao basically put his ego above the source material and produced a mess. Goro just doesn't have the talent and is there because the brand "Miyazaki"
I wish cartoon Saloon had the rights to DWJ's work..they did a nice adaption of My Fathers Dragon recently.

Well- That came out today and it's only 4 minutes long according to Disney+, so it wasn't even long enough to be in Visions... All this speculation for nothing lol

Yeah, I watched it and it is such a nothing burger. It honestly looks like something someone would post to YouTube for their demoreel.

I don't think Ghibli had lost its soul because of Earwig any more than it did when Earthsea came out. Earwig seemed to fail primarily due to Goro Miyazaki's inexperience and foray into unexplored territory (that being CGI), both of which together make a poor combination.

Yeah, I agree. I think the Ghibli Howl's Moving Castle is a beautiful and atmospheric movie to just watch as its own thing... but it's actually a terrible adaptation of the book, which removes a lot of Sophie's agency and power and puts Miyazaki's favourite themes (war bad, girls doing housework good) and setting aesthetics centre stage to the point that the actual themes and message of the book are lost.

I really wish more people would read the book. It's so good!

I agree, the book is so good that I sort of dislike the movie for how much it butchers it.
