Personally, I use prologs ONLY when necessary and it furthers the plot. For example, the prolog to my story Incarnation is actually used again toward the end in the epilog, making everything full circle. The whole story is already up on Wattpad for those who want to read ahead.
Basically, one of the main plot points of a demon deal the main character takes, in the beginning, is again referred to in the epilog. Also the fact his choice has consequences for what happens (can't spoil). Too often I see stories where the foreshadowings, prologs, etc, are dropped. Plus consequences are vital in storytelling. Doing it half-assed won't make the characters relatable nor give the readers a sense of risk.
This is more directed at writers who want to be serious than hobby writers. Those two are worlds apart.
