My complainst are basically with the font, as others has said, the font is very difficult to read, and I do have already problems in the eyes so this is painful, although the look overal looks pretty fresh.
Also I don't like the fact that the fresh updates AND the forums are down in the main site, that doesn't sound too good for me.
.... The forums link is at the bottom. I had to scroll all the way to find it. I preferred it at the top, or if possible, part of the drop-down menu when you click on your profile.
I also had a hard time trying to find my revenue/tipping page. It was under "Publishing"? IDK. Words were changed. I'm a bit lost.
We have to say that the changes to the website aren't exactly what we would have in mind if we had any say in the matter. First off, yeah, the Forums almost have disappeared, being relegated to the bottom of the page. At first we thought the forums had been eliminated in their entirety!
The text and look of everything is definitely going to take some getting used to. It's fairly hard on the eyes. Everything feels massively "blown up" where the "Tapas Tipping Has Arrived" section takes up half of a screen shot. Plus when you click on it, all it does is lead to a collections, not any actual tipping functionality on the website, which would be mildly confusing to any new readers.
It definitely feels like there are "winners" and "losers" with this update.
The new layout gives the premium "paid" content top shelf. The top 10 comics are all "premium" (for sale) series and the top 10 books are all "premium" (for sale) series. The third self is new "premium" (paid) comics. The fourth shelf is new "premium" (paid) books. The majority of the fifth shelf is paid.
For a company that began with independent creators in mind, and has a "creators first" motto, it feels like that the company culture is changing and the website is reflecting that. Whereas before the independent stuff came first and the pay stuff came not far after, now the pay stuff is in the spotlight in a major way and the independent stuff is a very distant bottom, an afterthought. We'd like to see the data at how many readers scroll down that far, because its probably going to be a minority. After all, only 10% of Google users go beyond the first page of results. Let's face it. It's a lot of effort to scroll that far. How many readers are going to do it?
Another big concern is now the website is going from "semi dynamic" to "semi static". We use the Tapas app every day and the content it promotes changes very infrequently. At least at Tapastic.com "Popular" changed up some and "Trending" was constantly in flux. Now the top 80% of the website is going to look the same day after day. How is that engaging to new readers?
Additionally the placement of all the premium content on the top of the page makes little sense to a new reader who cannot actually purchase the content through the website but instead must purchase through the app. What happens if they don't understand that? It would make more sense if you could purchase the content on your desktop, but currently that's not possible. Consequently, how many first time visitors are going to click "They Say I Was A King's Daughter", become confused because they can't read beyond the early free stuff, and then leave the website? It used to be the first things you could click were free in their entirety, so readers had a chance to look around and get a feel for Tapastic. Now everything in the first third of the website is suddenly gated.
Before today we felt like we had a reasonable chance, with a lot of updates and hard work, that we could slowly make our way to the top, ending up more often on Trending and eventually one day on Popular. Now the top of the ladder has effectively been made the bottom, which leads us to wonder, how will any new creators ever "break out"? Both of our series benefited from landing on Trending from time to time, now it feels that the value of "Trending" has largely been diminished. If new creators feel like they have no chance on Tapas, won't that create a decline in creator engagement?
Tapas doesn't owe us an audience. That said, when indie creators spend $1000s and 100s of hours marketing, bringing a new outside audience to Tapas, they and their premium creators largely benefit from that, meanwhile the indie "unprofessional" (Medium article refers to the premium creators as "professional", so that means the rest of us are unprofessional?) creators are placed at the bottom, benefiting the least. It would be one thing if Tapas was spending $10,000s on marketing to place premium creators first, but right now it seems that the non-premium creators are spending more time and money on marketing and promotion that what Tapas currently is, yet we get bottom billing. Is that fair?
We really hate to say it but LINE Webtoons has always seemed much more friendly to new creators (with new series being easily discovered and gaining 100s to 1000s of subs in a matter of weeks, whereas those same series on Tapastic struggle for months to find a following) while Tapastic favored their high subs creators. This update and how it prioritizes paid over unpaid creators now polarizes things even further.
We realize that Tapas has to make money in order to stay open, but it feels like the company is becoming more and more like a gated pay publisher (The Big Five) and less and less an open platform for independent creators.
Our dream of making it to print just got a lot smaller today.
Meaningful success on Tapas seems now further away than ever.
Someone pointed it out elsewhere, but it feels like much of Tapastic's success was built upon readership brought in by independent, unpaid creators, and now that the site is doing well, they're getting crapped on. I don't think Tapastic bears any ill will towards its creators, but it does come across that way, and actions do speak louder than words. As it stands, the current design sends a clear message of monetization first and foremost.
I also agree with what @GoldenPlume points out regarding having paid-only content being the first thing a reader sees. I think many of us can attest that the general audience on the desktop site skews young, and likely cannot pay to read comics. So there's a definite risk of a new user visiting the site, seeing 5 rows of pay-to-read content, and thinking "This site's not for me".
Anyhow, I 100% understand Tapastic is running a business and we're using their service free of charge, at the end of the day they don't technically owe us anything. However, I won't be surprised if artists start looking for other venues when they realize there's fewer means to find an audience outside of a staff feature. When I first joined the site about a year ago, it seemed like a relatively level playing field when it came to finding an audience. But if I were a new artist joining today, I'd feel like I was starting out 10 feet underground.
Promoting already-popular and prominent artists isn't a bad marketing strategy in the short-term, but I have to wonder how many new and diverse creators will be turned off in the long-term with this kind of design.
My complaints are very much the same others have in this thread. I honestly thought I had somehow ended up on the mobile version when I logged in this morning and I was quite shocked to discover this was a whole new look. I do think this update plays definitely in favour of the more popular comics and paid content in terms of visibility, which I find kinda sad. I already thought finding new less popular comics to read on Tapastic was difficult but now even the trending comics have been moved to a less visible spot.
I was also one of those who had trouble finding the forum but I also felt like everything else was misplaced as well. I had to take time to find where everything was and I was quite weirded out that dashboard was re-named "publish". It really feels like someone just took the mobile version and scaled it up a bit. It doesn't really work well on desktop and the changes seem unnessessary.
I can understand visual changes and updates but I do feel like this is less desktop friendly than the previous look, which does affect the user experience in a negative manner. It's too early to tell if the new place of the trending section will affect lesser known comics but if it does then I'll certainly be disappointed. If this whole update was to make the Tapastic website more profitable then I think it does it at the expense of the comic creators. I truly hope the Tapastic staff will listen to users and think again about some of the choices they've made.
My issue with that is that you actually CANNOT READ the first 4 or 5 rows of advertised content on the website, after you get past the first 3 teaser episodes it tell you to download the ap (because you can't buy or use keys on the website). Do not promote shit on a platform you can't read it on and need to get another platform to read it on. I assume (and hope) this will be changed because of the 'publishing' tab at the side? For for now though the front page is an ad ridden cock block. IF YOU'RE GONNA PUSH THESE SERIES ON THE WEBSITE THEN THEY SHOULD BE READABLE ON THE WEBSITE.
Aside from that, yeah, the order is pretty bad. Form the readers stand point, you're getting a lot of locked content you have to have a phone and the ap to read, and you have to pay for, not that I have issues with having to pay for something but it makes the site look like you have to pay to read EVERYTHING on the site. Which is going to confuse a lot of people and be driving a lot of people away. (The list of people that don't pay for comics is NOT excluded to people too cheep to pay, there are a lot of people that CAN'T due to age or not having access to resources like a CC or PP)
Also there are a lot of repeating titles, people stop scrolling before hitting the popular and tending section after seeing the same thing enough times, because it looks like it's just repeating stuff you already saw, enforcing the idea that you already seen what you haven't scrolled through yet.
Then from a creators stand point, yeah it is absolutely horrible, and I can honestly see the indi none-featured creators disappearing on this website, from both driving away existing creators to other platforms that they have better reach on, and from driving away new creators because there is no opportunity for them to be seen when just starting out. This was already difficult enough before for a lot of artists. I know that advertising is up to creators but there not a way to do it ON this website outside the algorithms, so then WHY upload to it when they can't actually advertise on it and only outside of it?
ASIDE FROM THE FRONT PAGE
I don't like how all my notification icons look the same, I can't tell my likes apart from my comments in my notifications tab anymore.
Also agreeing with others on that forum link.
Edit: And yes, I don't know what it is with the font but I can't read things right?? The keep reading the words out of order and it's just really difficult to read paragraphs now and they even look just overwhelming and jumpbled. Like the letters are clear and look fine on their own, but they are just not registering in my head as coherent sentences anymore. I don't know how to explain it better
I personally have no issue with the font-choice, but I can def. see how it would be troublesome for people with visual impairment or dyslexia.
My main issue is with the layout of the front-page. I've already emailed Tapastic about it personally, because I couldn't find the link to the forums (why the HECK is it not at the top of the page?), but gosh, it is a visual mess. It is cluttered and busy and confusing, and shoving the popular/trending/new categories down to the bottom is a bad idea. It leaves the top of the front page - which is the bit 90% of visitors will bother with - locked to the spotlight and two top 10 categories, the content of which is a lot more static than popular/trending.
Also, the trending category includes both comics and books now, apparently? And some thumbnails are rectangular instead of square? And sort of strewn randomly around the front page?
It's... not great.
Okay, a lot has already been said. so I will only focus on so far undiscussed issues with the font:
<3 and :3 don't look so good anymore. The cat smiley :3 is something I personally like to use often, but the <3 is something I see very often here on tapastic (because this is such a lovely community <3 ) and with the new font, it simply doesn't really convey the same feeling anymore. I know it's sounds silly, but isn't this friendly feeling what makes a lot of us make tapastic feel like home?
But I do want to add that I agree with a lot of things that already has been brought up, especially what GoldenPlume said.
Emphasis by us.
Tonight we're trying to get an update done for Wednesday but its really hard to concentrate on creating free content for Tapas after what they decided to do today, without soliciting any feedback first. Staff's sudden unilateral "monetization first" emphasis makes us feel so unappreciated and literally crapped on. We're not sure what other creators do for Tapas, but we've specifically gone out of our way to do as much as we can to help the company, at our time and expense. Staff knows what we've done for them so we're not going to list it, but it's a significant amount, and we've never asked for anything in return but goodwill and a fair shake.
This update feels like the exact opposite of goodwill towards independent creators.
Since the day we downloaded the app, it has always been monetization first and foremost. And if its not a premium series, then its a favored series that is already well known. At one time we counted something like 7/30 spots of the app spots dedicated to GamerCat. We kept asking ourselves, does GamerCat really need that many positions? What about featuring someone else?
We never quite liked how the app was designed to favor a select few, but we didn't feel it was a big issue because we still had Tapastic.com where any series had the potential to succeed. Now with "Trending" at the bottom of the barrel, without a staff feature or a daily snack, a new series has gone to having no chance to succeed.
Also for those who wanted to hide from the heavy monetization of the app, they had the option to read on Tapastic.com and not be constantly bombarded by premium series. Now those premium series are literally chasing us down, taking over Tapastic, demanding every ounce of attention. It's down right obnoxious. We know they are there and we will buy them if we want to. Please don't beat us over the head with them.
There needs to be healthy balance between free and monetization. The Tapas app has always felt like its "paid" and Tapastic.com was "free". It was an acceptable dichotomy. Now everything is all "paid".
As a new reader we would be totally turned off if everything we saw was paid only. We would assume since the first 5 racks of stuff is paid, Tapas is all paid content, and given that its the same stuff repeated over and over, that is all the website has to offer. Who wants to walk into a bookstore and be bombarded with padlocked books and comics and blatant ads for those padlocked books and comics. What kind of reader experience is that?
We seriously hope that Tapas staff reconsider this iteration of the website, because in its current form, we don't know how loyal we can remain to a company that shows so little concern towards us in return.
Alright so... they pushed the popular and trending section down, like... ouch, that hurts enough. I mean, from a business standpoint, I understand that they have to advertise their premiums in order to earn money, of course.
But now they splashed the premium comics all over the front page, and to actually unlock and read them properly you have to go to the app? Whut? Or did I miss something? It doesn't make sense to me to mirror the layout of the app if you can't experience app and desktop version the same way.
As soon as I was getting started back up, the host website itself just has to make it harder on all of us.

Like many have said in this thread, I'm frustrated that the sections for independent creators have been pushed all the way to the bottom. I understand the inclusion of paid content, as tapas is in the end a business, but it feels like my heart's been kicked in the dick when said paid content fills up more than half of the website. Along with random advertisements for the various comics, it feels really messy to browse through. If they had just made a half half portion between paid and unpaid comics, where clicking on the 'view more' button on the paid content would show all of the 'professional' work, I feel that would have been fair, as it both promotes paid work and still gives us a chance. The current front page though, I'm not liking it at all.
Fuck this shit, maybe I'll just move to LINE.

Right now I feel "so done" like, "what am I even still doing here?"
On one hand, they leave confusing rules that require that users be 18+ (for the app) but on the other hand they put that rounded font that makes everything look both childish AND painful to the eyes for many of us with lesser or bigger sight-impairment and/or dyslexia. Not to mention that :3 and <3 indeed no longer look the same, yes (and it does matter).
I really do not understand this choice, considering adults still have this ongoing idea that "comics are for kids". And then we have ads for games that are mostly targeting youth? (though, there is that one ad for a business trading software, and those casino ads that are probably illegal here due to how strictly luck-based games are regulated).
It'd make more sense if those ads were more about art-related things, be they softwares, pet games or anything such that appeal to people who read comics or books.
As for the front page layout, I agree with everything that's been said above. It's cluttered, repetitive, gated, static, and seriously, "Tipping has arrived" is getting old. It's been several months now.
I really hate that books and comics are mixed together confusingly. Everything confuses me: some sections have a title, others don't. Everything looks random as heck, and why did they hide the Forums button?
I also agree with @kurapikasuki, the notifications icons are now very confusing, and way too dark against a pale background. The contrast is unpleasant to the eye and makes me want to just ignore it all.
I'm so upset that I've reached that stage where I'm not peeved but just numbed. It's getting to be hard to care, because, like @GoldenPlume I've put a lot of effort and energy in Tapastic, and the more it goes, the less I get back. It used to be a place I loved but my love is crumbling apart like the letters of the brand name.
We heard "something big" was coming but we were not told what as usual and were not asked our opinion in any way. Now I don't even know why I'm even giving mine right now. I feel like there is a growing disconnection between the @STAFF and the creator community. Even readers are now getting to be alienated by the amount of premium content pressed at their face.
My feeling is that by pressing monetized content so much, pressing popular comics and practically hiding away the indies, Tapas is just going to scare away new creators and new readers and end up suffocating itself in a downward spiral.
The only thing that could make it up to me is if @STAFF tells us that this update also will allow for features that were not possible on tapastic.com, such as changing the order of episodes of a series, or making series co-owned by several creators.
Hm, I'm still letting it settle. I know that the order of the front page isn't set and will be going through changes and Michael is already working on changing the font.
So I'm a bit more hopeful with this site update than the last several that were also dramatic garbage fires. The idea of the brands unifying has great possibilities and could be the first steps in bring favorable app features to the site.
Seems like there are common threads to everyone's criticisms here, so question to the community- If the front page gets a better rearrange (Popular/Trending/New back up to the top) and the font gets changed, how would you feel about the update then?
Oh yes, and tell @STAFF to get a move on with fixing the image uploading problem here in the forums. They've taken long enough as it is even though its a "low priority fix" which by itself shouldn't be that hard to fix.
A lot better, tbh. Just pushing the popular/trending/new back up top, and for the love of god, adding the link to the forum to the header bar, would do a lot.
There are a few smaller things - like the colours of different notifications, etc. - but re-arraging some elements on the front page would go a long way towards solving my biggest issues. I'm definitely not against the idea of changing things, but this current layout has some serious problems.
thanks @PotooGryphon for the info!
I could see this a year ago with the app update. Personally I dont like the app, the microtransactions, the choice of books etc etc
I would like that, definitely. My gripe was that only premium stuff is shown, free comics pushed away, and a simple rearrangement would fix that.
That being said, I get the feeling that this update kind of "confirmed suspicions" a lot of creators have had about tapas ditching free comics in favor of premium stuff, so there is some deeper hurt here that might warrant some attention in the form of... Dunno, some statement about where the company intends to steer tapastic, or some actions to boost the forum and creative community.
If the site only pushes the premium content it will entirely change what the Tapastic website is and they'll lose a lot of their current readers/writers/users and gain different ones in a smaller number. Way less people are willing to spend money or jump through the hoops required to get keys than would just like to read regular, indie content. From the way the front page is now, it's not even clear that there is free, indie content available on the website.
I also agree with @elixiadragmire that the choice of books they push doesn't appeal to me. I've always been under the impression that only premium books even exist on the website. If they allowed indie books as well I think that would be fun and would appeal to more people.
I asked Michael about this too recently. The response I got was that it's in the works. Notifications and push notifications are a bit tricky w/ iOS in particular and they're still seeing what is and isn't allowed. They're still trying to find that healthy balance between immediate feedback and collecting multiple notifications into one push notification.
I'd be really happy to see notifications make it to the app too. Perhaps that'll be another thing made easier with the brands merging.
Yes, staff could make these adjustments and it would help, but the most disconcerting part of this whole update matter is that staff actually believed that the new format in its current condition was good enough to push out live.
Why?
It's not like they promised creators something on 4/17/17 and had to rush a half finished job to meet their promises. They had all the time they wanted, all the time they needed to make sure independant creators didn't get buried, that the forums didn't get nearly eliminated, that premium series didn't dominate the site, to check with creators and get beta feedback, etc.
Supposedly (according to Twitter) staff showed the website last week to some creators. Who? The premium peeps? Seriously, what independant creator with less than 10K subs signed off on this?
It feels like so little consideration went into this update without considering how it would impact the 99%.
Agreed 100%. Is this update a "freudian slip" and it shows what staff really thinks of creators? It's hard not to be seriously wounded by this unexpected change.
Suddenly now everything we do for Tapas.io (Independents Obsolete?) feels like we're just hamsters turning the monetization wheel for another big corporation.
Are we all just "feeder comics" for the premium peeps?
lol if there were plans to shut down the forum we would know (the mod team would at least be notified, which we haven't sooooo).
The forums just aren't the main draw to this site. They need to make conservative decisions about their layout and the links to comics and books (especially the money making ones) are undoubtedly more important to have up there than a community forums link (and let's face it, the forum community is much, MUCH smaller than the main website community).
Totally agree, there was no rush and they could have fine tuned things better, however botched ill-thoughtout updates are sort of how Tapastic rolls. lol In fact I think each one has had its share of rocky road drama storms. I'm so used to them by now, and did used to get upset by it.
I don't think the staff is out to put creators down. Share holders may have a say in site design, but idk. More than likely with all the flood of feedback, they get the message and the site will definitely be changed. And as for the sneak peek of the design I think it was a site slip that happened, much like how sometime the banner feature accidentally gets changed and such.
I'm just thankful that with this update, scheduled episodes sitewide weren't released with no way of creators deleting them. lol Cuz that was a thing.
Y'know, since I started uploading Daniel here I've gotten a ton of awesome new readers, and this was the first webcomic forum I've been to that was full of nice, open-minded people that hasn't turned to a bunch of snippy a-holes (yet). XD
As the forum gets more people I expect it to change, but gosh it's getting harder and harder to defend Tapas as a website now that it's all about those behind a pay wall, and I used to kinda try. XD I realize they can't work like Webtoon since THEY have the equivalent of Google behind them, but maybe Tapas should consider looking at the free uploaded comics who become popular as they do instead of only going by the people who submit to them or they have personally found and decided to use as their special babies. XP That would be better than sweeping the popular freebies completely under the rug, hoping they're not as noticed as your main babes.
EDIT: Or heck, if making tons more popular comics into Premium ones isn't an option, then show off Patreon pages for popular comics on the main page or something. Just, y'know, try to show the love for the big freebies somehow! =P
Even if they don't fix up the layout, I'd still probably stay here since I already have a fanbase here and leaving wouldn't really benefit me much, but yeah, if it stays like this then newcomers are either going to turn away or be screwed from the beginning, no matter the quality of the comic. And when people are allowed to upload their own written works, will they get any consideration from Tapas if their story becomes popular? Heck, will it even be possible for a freebie written work to be noticed at all here?
Basically, yeah, gettin' way too hard to defend Tapas as it is. XD
Also, if this site is really about independent creators, then you should embrace your community aspect; your forums...don't you think? Put that link back in an obvious spot! XP
i hope you don't mind me chiming in instead of making a new thread of my own.
I actually couldn't be bothered with the new font, i can live with that. But i find the new front page to be:
1) Way too cluttered.
2) Top 10 will always be Top 10, so i personally feel it's very unfair to push Trending and Popular TOO FAR DOWN in favor of the Top 10s that never really change : ( give little guys a fighting chance, haha!
On a different note, i honestly could not find "forums" tab anymore? i typed it into my URL bar and hoped it was still saved in there (which it was, thankfully)
where did the forum tab went to? how can i easily access it again?
For now, yes, I think that people would calm down, but honestly, this reaction from creators seems to be a symptom of a much deeper problem
I agree with @devika s response that
even before the app was created, creators seemed to still have a fair amount of difficulty promoting their comic on the site. It may have been frustrating and all, but I feel that creator apprehensions really ramped up with the release of the app. the app primarily consist of A) paid comics or B) extremely popular content (maybe 20ish series). With all of that relegated to the front, and trending and browse all (the main ways the majority of creators get seen) being not really easy to access (you have to click through at least one or 2 pages to get to them) nor having any flashier colors to incentivize clicking on it (like the trending tab looks similar to all the other tabs in browse all, no more importance is brought to it through design or color unlike banners present on the front page), promoting a comic on a platform that was already tricky to promote on just became a lot harder.
Even after the app came out though, at least there was the website which remained relatively unchanged, but after the new update, I think the reaction that came out of trending/popular being moved to the bottom of the front page was a result of seeing a trend where promotion is becoming an increasingly difficult task and for fear that this trend will continue in the future.
Honestly, I don't think too many creators have a problem with the paid for content being part of taptastic, but to me, the ratio of paid/popular content to everything else is a little alarming. There's tons of categories for paid for content including top books and tons of collections, but rather few for the majority of creators (pretty much trending and browse all are it). I don't know if it's the same for others, but I can't help but see it as "there's pretty much 2 categories that help promote the majority of comics and yet all of them are buried under other content. How hard can it be to promote just 2 categories?" If you bury those two underneath everything else no one will see it, yet if you promote those two they take up a pretty small space, they're just 2 after all, and anyone that looks at the app for more than 5 seconds is still going to see all the other promoted content. I mean, i'm not an app designer so i'm sure there's more complexities to making a website or app than I think, but i'd be lying to myself if I denied the sentiments I expressed previously.
This sounds brutal but i think many of us need to emotionally walk away from the platform. Countless of dodgy updates have shown were not a priority here, were they're feeder comics as Plume put it, were doing their marketing. That's why since they're company statement didn't match my own i stopped promoting the site as the main place to read and started to push my own site and other mirrors. I'll stay for my readers as long as my readers are still around but I'm not comfortable pushing new readers to THIS SITE when i feel it's not a good place to read. I mean i will still let people know, along with other mirrors incase they're already using the site but i no longer push it as my MAIN site.
It's heartbreaking when your invested but at the end of the day, they're a business, and Thier investors are more powerful than us. It's best if we steal our shelves as a community, support each to create outside of host sites since like partners, they come and goes but friends remain
For me it's difficult to bite the hand that feeds as my readership on Tap trumps my tumblr mirrors.
I'm not opposed to trying out other sites but at this point in time I don't really want to start afresh again. Having my own site sounds nice too, however I really don't have the time to maintain a domain as well as work on updates for multiple series. Unless Tap does something egregious (claiming rights to our work, shutting down completely, etc.), I'll stay here and still continue to support them.
I'm just glad the staff, especially Michael Son, are here to listen and are open to suggestions.
Same. I'm thankful that Tap exists and brought me the readership I have, but what has motivated me most to draw my comics is ...Tapastic itself. The website, the community, the thrill to be part of it as it all grows... It has really fueled me a lot. But since the end of Support Program and the ongoing panics about every new update my feelings have been seriously shaken. I only wish for this platform to grow strong and nice for everybody, but I recognize myself less and less in it. I'm getting alienated and the thrill of submitting pages is dying.
Putting Trending/Popular to the bottom was a massive faux pas and terrible signal sent to the entire community. It's not something we're going to forget so easily, I'm afraid. And I say this as a person who has a hard time holding grudges or remembering traumatic and negative things.
