Tumblr's New Adult Content Policy

This whole nonsense borked up my comic's mainsite since I use the tumblr theme for hosting.

I also have friends worried over income and their followings.

I want to back up the recommendation for Fur Affinity for commission work. It's a wild place [the sfw filter is there for a reason] and has its own set of drama but I've had more financial support there then anywhere else. To those that drift over let me know, I can give you a promo. I'm not popular in their standards but it's enough to get eyes on the work. Ive been there since 2012 so if you need any help finding your way around, speak up.

It's a complete mess and twitter has been on fire all day over the topic.

I don't draw NSFW and I honestly hate running into it when I'm scrolling through my feed. So I mean, yaaay improved experience... for me and the 6 other people in the world that hate looking at NSFW stuff..............

Sarcasm aside, I'm pretty indifferent to the change by now, lots of websites have been doing stuff like this so I guess I've become numb to it. I mean, at the least at least I won't feel like I HAVE to start drawing porn to get noticed.... by the 6 other users that will be left to use the site after the purge.

But for real, FA is a great place for any kind of NSFW artist.

think of it like a digital version of the biblical flood, clean out the old to bring it the new. all sinners at once and who cares who else is in the way. end of the day it's just another form of censorship.
and if anybody is in the EU who are thinking of just making their own site and sticking up a pay wall, be warned charging entry for webcomics inside the EU is subject to the VATMOSS TAX. I know this because it was part of my business model and another reason i scrapped having my own site.
until all this political correctness crap is got rid of you will find more and more of this stuff being used as an excuse for people to make money, forcing people to pay for something they would have done/ got for free. and at the end it's the creators who suffer.

ahw, really? That's so sad. I really wish people wouldn't demonize NSFW content as much as they do. They were already using a 'safe mode', people can decide for themselves what they want to see and what not. I can't think of any artists from the top of my head, but I'm sure there's a few on tumblr that I follow that will be affected by this

The twitter layout sucks looking through images.
And I don't understand the tagging system at all. Like on tumblr and insta you can post 5 relevant tags on your work and it will show up in user searches. And usually people have used those tags before and suggestions for those tags will pop up when you begin typing. Like #norsemythology. BUT on twitter there's no such system and you can't tell if the tags you put in are generally searched? Not to mention some people add tags and others don't?

In my experiences, they don't need their arts to show up in search. They only need a platform to connect to their viewers. Also, when you follow a lot of artists in the same genre, twitter will give you a lot of good recommendation for that genre artists. It's kind of like a "hidden network".

I hate Twitter to be honest. I only use it because other people use it. I hate how they generate notifications for just the fact that someone tweeted something or that they liked something. I only want notifications if someone actively mentions me.

I don't really care tumblr is banning nsfw content because a lot of sites do that anyway. The real problems are:

1) tumblr allowed porn in the first place and now have a site flooded with porn unlike other sites that set the policy when it was created. This means they have to use bots (because real humans are too much effort) to flag porn

2) This is where the real problem lies: the algorithm is broken and in its infant stage so if you are dumb enough to think "lol I don't do porn, i'm safe!" no you idiot, your work will get flagged too. People are getting pictures of flowers flagged and other stuff. Stop focusing on the whole tumblr breaking down on nsfw content and focus on tumblr is breaking down on EVERY CONTENT THAT A ROBOT THINKS IS PORN.

It's actually already got a decent human following tho! I get a good handful of human commissions and while my human work isn't as popular as anthro, it still gets attention! It's one of those instances where it's a niche within a niche.

And yes. It's a community built on personal [fur/persona and oc] art and artists, so it treats the creative community a bit differently than IP fandoms.

I'm not thrilled about this because they've also been flagging SFW stuff as NSFW. Whatever algorithm they're using is garbage.

I'm very torn and sad. I can only imagine what it feels like to have your account deactivated or your content flagged for not doing anything. And as someone who left a place where they were abused, I can't blame them. It just really hurts that the people leaving are people I am attached to.

The only thing I will say is that I will miss them and I hope they really are leaving for the right reasons not because they're losing their smut.

• as mentioned, their algorithms for detecting NSFW are hilariously bad. I had probably around.... 10-15ish posts flagged? None were actually NSFW and we all had a good laugh looking at which of my drawings were Too Hot For Tumblr
• you have to just.... scroll through your whole blog though. Like, there's not a collection of all the posts that got flagged by tumblrs Bots Who Are Trying Very Hard But Not Very Good At This for you to review, you gotta go on the tumblr.com/blog/[your username here] view of your blog and you just gotta scroll through everything. I've been on tumblr since 2011 so THAT'S fun.
• you can't request review unless you personally posted a thing, so if the tumblr you reblogged a flagged post from isn't around anymore or doesn't want to go back and request reviews for all their old posts, then that post might just disappear if its not caught by tumblr mods.
• things that are flagged and then unflagged are pushed to the top of your blog! CONGRATULATIONS NOW ALL YOUR POSTS ARE VISIBLE, BUT THEY'RE OUT OF ORDER. (the whole first page of my tumblr is previously flagged old posts now)
• RIP everyone who uses RSS with tumblr and is getting notifications of all these ancient posts being reposted as if they're new.
• DRAFTS CAN GET FLAGGED, and we have some anecdotal evidence that they might sometimes get posted publicly if a mod unflags them. WHICH IS GREAT IF YOU HAVE STUFF IN YOUR DRAFTS THAT YOU WANTED TO KEEP PRIVATE!! A few people are saying theirs stayed in their drafts after being unflagged, so idk if this has been fixed or if mods just,,, messed up and published things they weren't supposed to??? ANYWAY JUST A NEW LAYER OF THIS NIGHTMARE

Probably because it requires actual effort so why not purge everything to give the illusion you’re actually doing something?

As someone who has copped out of doing work in order to do as little as possible, I think that’s an accurate guess. I mean its like how instead of actually cleaning and putting stuff away, I just shove it in my closet and hope nobody looks. And now I have a perpetually filthy closet that’s too much work to clean. But at least for a while the rest of my room LOOKED clean... at least until it got dirty again and now I have no space in my closet so I pile things up in corners and on top of my bed, while at least having some stuff organized under my bed.

Yeah Tumblr’s doing the online equivalent of that. Incidentally, that’s also how I hid whatever smut I got ahold of. So yeah, that sounds like what Tumblr is doing.
