None of my family/friends use Twitter and their biggest complaint when they've tried to get started is that there isn't anythjng 'going on' or that they don't know how to interact with the people on their feeds. All I'll say on that is your Twitter feed is only as interesting as you make it. If you surround yourself with politics, news and business accounts you're going to have a bad time.
When I made my account I made it my mission to follow as many artists as possible whether I knew them or not, because that's the thing I'm interested in and that's what I want to be exposed to. I followed artists, editors, animators, gamers, even actors I liked, and they'd all post the wildest things that were so interesting- things I'd never have discovered for myself, like artwork, projects, and websites I never knew existed- and as I liked and joined discussions (which takes a little courage when you're the new kid in school) people began following me back here and there. I made friends, we had jokes, it was nice.
But you need to surround yourself with the things you love on there, first and foremost, otherwise you'll find nothing on there interests you and you'll be out of there before Christmas. Don't be afraid to follow someone or like a tweet out the blue, people don't care about your motivations. I've had major artists chime in with a simple 'been there myself!' when I've mentioned a problem I've been having, and that's all Twitter's really about. It's about sharing and supporting each other in small ways, even if that's retweeting someone's link to Patreon or liking a picture of a new mug they bought.
Don't over think it, be genuine and honest, and surround yourself with interesting strangers you can learn from. That's all you need to do. Have a great time!
