It's up to you what makes them unconventional, so I won't limit anybody by itemizing a list of things that make a character unconventional in my opinion. Let's just see something that would (hopefully pleasantly lol) surprise people. Something they don't get to see that often, especially if it gives a demographic that doesn't get a lot of time to shine in fiction, or a specific fiction genre, a spot in the forefront.
My female lead from "Crystal Blue" is a muscle princess, which I think is pretty rare for female leads across the board. Even when female characters are very strong, female leads are rarely given a lot of visible muscle, and female characters with a lot of muscle are often slotted into a tomboyish space, which while fine sometimes, doesn't always have to be the case.
(Yes, I work out. Yes I like wearing dresses. We exist.)
She also has vitiligo, which she typically covers with makeup and hair dye, but it causes purple patches in her hair and on her skin.
As an author with skin irregularities myself, I have a particular interest in characters being portrayed as beautiful even when they have uncommon traits like these.
