I think it has a large effect on how people perceive romance, especially young people. Look at YA; there's this trend of the moody, mysterious, abusive older boy - and young girls eat it up. They're conditioned to. And it can really land them in the shit when they dating - especially with boys who've been told by the same media that that behaviour is not only okay, but romantic
most of it doesnt personally effect me, because im a lesbian - but i have my own problems w how my kind of relationships are represented in media. there's this massive trend of every time a woman is happy and romantic with another woman, she dies. violently. it has a history in being the only way w/w relationships could be published, but now things have changed, but this narrative has remained the same. when you keep punishing wlw for daring to be happy and in love, by killing them, it sends a really strong message to young wlw.
like - a really good (or bad) example is pousse from oitnb; she was about to get out, into a great job, in a happy relationship with a girl who - like herself - had been brought back from the brink of suicide. then, she stands up against police brutality, and is murdered. pointlessly. the message in that - the message people learn, subconsciously - is that wlw (especially black wlw) arent allowed to persue happiness, love, or justice.
this shit fucks people up, and media makers need to start realising that.
anyway... [tucks away my soap box]
