I'm gonna say that I do like them, if the person is prepped for how they work. We've done some neat scroll down which gives a kinda animation feel of when they zoom down into a scene from above in an tv opening

Julie Schwartz era Superman and Fawcett era Captain Marvel are the greatest examples of superhero genre.

Manga has grown stagnant off a need to chase formulas like the shonen formula and isekai formula in order to turn a profit.

European comics are overrated and are typically either hyper pretentious or meandering comedies.

Episodic storytelling needs to make a comeback and the focus on big sprawling epics is killing comic book storytelling worldwide. Given my own comic, yes this makes me a hypocrite.

Comics: they're getting too political and should really bury the old superheros and start fresh with new superheros with new powers and worlds/stories.

Manga: they are getting generic with harems and cute girls, boring cliched trash.

Webcomics: webcomics should be shorter and less 15 year endeavours, 3 to 6 year stories would be healthier for both readers and authors.

I feel like I'm the only person who enjoys reading vertical scroll comics, but only on desktop.

But that's only about my reading preference and not about "vertical scroll sux on mobile and that is OBJECTIVE TRUTH!!!!" so I don't know if this counts for this thread...

Well I hate the vertical scroll format, but when there are comics like it that format, I do read them on computer, it makes things a bit better most times (although sometimes I have to adjust size for text - a good tip someone on this forum gave me, but I don't remember who).
Scroll format of phone is horribly painful to me.
I don't mind reading traditional pages on phone through.

Me too! But I don't read comics on the phone. I find it hard to appreciate anything that small!

That's the business model the manga publishers have been using since the, what, the 1950s. They, the publishers, tend to be slaves to trends.

The industry might have to change soon since actual audience numbers are shrinking. This more a combination of readers finding webtoons to read and the low birth rate.

I find it odd that I don't agree with your first statement about comics precisely because I agree with the second.

Comics have always been political but their characters reflect the times they were born in. Just look at the X-Men. When these characters are repeatedly given facelifts and pushed into the modern era it's like stuffing and restuffing a dead pet over and over again. It's jarring.

We need new characters that reflect the struggles of our times. And this will not be overt politicizing either. Lest we forget that stories are written by people too and if a story is written by someone who doesn't care about people, who doesn't care about the world and who doesn't wonder about whether the paths we walk are right or wrong, then I wonder is it a story worth reading.

I agree on the jarring part, it's strange that they tell over and over the story of a character, always changing it and molding it like it's made of playdough, it's like the character is no longer real and just a mouthpiece or puppet for the author to spat whatever they want.

I think the stories always being political is more subjective if anything, To me it boils down to this, I can read any book as a non-American from the 2000's to the 1950 no problem, but after I can't because the books are soo specific about the politics and views of America that I am alienated. That's my biggest problem with American comics they have gone so political and have been entrenched soo much in American politics that they are no longer universal.

I think the problem is that they follow the shonen formula with no variation, like even shonen jump has created 3 different takes on the formula with varien depiction in the form of Dr.Stone, BHA and Black Clover (plus act-one but I haven't read it)

1. is the shounen but with science and knowledge progress as the power level system
2. is the shounen depiction of the superheros genre with some twist and turn thrown in
3. is All the cliches but made soo quick and with twist here and there

also it's more the "Naruto" formula than the Shonen formula

I agree on the isekai wished they stopped with the harem Op MC who is just a bland piece of paper with a face -.- it's getting old and boring

Vertical scrolling formats are trash--they make my fingers hurt because I have to scroll too much
Also, they don't allow me to make cool double page spreads and that makes me piss mad.

also, add that the slow scrolling makes the experience in fight scenes have such slow pacing <.< it ruins fight scenes for me since its like 5 seconds per panel instead of wham bam thank you M'am

I don't know if I agree with your full statement, but I frequently lament that a Nation Comics lawsuit derailed Fawcett /Captain Marvel. The comic industry could have benefited from more comics having that style of wide eyed imagination and whimsy.

I prefer the art in many European comics; but some are well written and some are bloated gasbags.

I don't know how unpopular of an opinion this is but.....

I really don't like comics made with 3D modeling software like Poser and such. They always really creep me out for some reason beyond just the uncanny-ness of them.

I have a hard seeing why people have a problem with "scrolling", Keyboards have space bars, Page UP and Down keys. That makes reading webtoons a bit faster.

I think it's easier with desktops, because all you have to do is mildly press down on a button and hold while you read. But with a phone, you have to keep swiping and swiping...you can give yourself a repetitive motion injury if you do that for too long.

A lot of them overuse negative space, and it's really annoying in some of them when you cant even see an entire panel at once. Cool stuff can be done with scrolling, but meh...and phone screens are simply not ideal for reading friggin comics, Movie and shows for that matter, either. I know you on desktop but I just say this since it's what the format's catering to.

@Hot_Coffee I can deal with movies, shows, and streaming on phones better than I can deal with reading scrolling comics...

I do agree with the abuse of negative space- I dont care for reading scroll comics where the "gutters" between panels are as large/wide as the panels themselves; some creators may think they are being clever in "making the upload look long", but it's annoying...OR the thing where where they throw the word balloons/lettering in those gutter spaces. There's only a few comics I read with the scroll format...
