Tapas send out an e-mail recently mentioning that they are adding GL and LGBTQ+ genres which is coming soon.

As well as later in the year, implementing a secondary sub genre you can add to your comics.

Who is excited for it???

I know I am.

I'm pretty excited. We had a thread talking about how it'd be good to have things like this just a few weeks back, so it makes me feel like the staff are listening to the community and addressing creators needs.

I'm looking forward to the subgenre so much as are a lot of creators, I'm sure. Labelling something as just "BL" or something when it's a mix of several genre elements is so limiting.

So, so excited. I like that we finally have a bit of gender equity with a GL category and makes someone who like wlw content feel more seen. LGBTQ+ being there is also amazing! Queer people's stories aren't just romance or boy's love and it's great that the categories aren't reducing our stories to just one type of romance anymore. It feels nice to be more seen.

Thank god I don’t have to keep this quiet anymore hahaha I’m so excited

I'm going to use both new features.
Actually, it may even encourage me to post a new story that I did not feel like posting under any of the existing categories.
Having the possibility of adding a subgenre will also help me a lot as a reader. It should partially alleviate the bad search and horrid story display system by giving the reader a little bit more of an idea of what they are going to click on.

I'm not using it since I still feel like mine is stronger on Fantasy (maybe if the second genre was non-premium), but it's pretty nice. I just hope people won't turn up their noses at the LGBTQ+ since a lot of binge-readers go for the other two for the quick to digest romance.

They’re offering the second genre for non-Premium works too!

And lastly, coming a little later this year will be the introduction of the two genre categorization system for community series. Creators will be able to assign a primary genre to their series along with a secondary genre to help contextualize the story.

i'm excited about the fact we are going to be allowed to put 2 genres... now lets push for the co-creator feature >:l

I hope they keep adding them. I'd like Tapas to have Superhero and Webtoon to have BL / GL and both to have more. I know a lot of these genre are overlapping but I'd really like more genres all around :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Oh gosh I'm so happy to read this, both updates will come in great <33

Hot dang! Well, I wouldn't be part of the collection until this is live, but it's good to look foward to that!

It's a good inclusion. I'm not personally excited for it as it doesn't really affect me or my work. But I'm kind of surprised that they didn't just already have it

Well, generally, the more categories - the better. I'm particularly glad to see GL

However, I'm not sure, why do we need LGBTQ+ and I don't understand, which comics will fall into this category. I understand, that "BL" and "GL" both are just gender-specific sub types (sub genres?) of Romance in essence (while "romance" genre on Tapas is used in a narrow sense, like heterosexual romance, which makes these genres distinct). But what "LGBTQ+" is about?
Is it just about a presence of LGBTQ+ characters? But in this case, I don't understand why does it need to be put into specific category. Moreover, there are a LOT of comics, featuring them, but already having another genre and another strong theme.
Or, maybe, it means, that the plot is concentrated on the problems of LGBTQ+ people, conjugated with their orientation/gender? But there are too few works, concentrating on this topic. It doesn't look as a genre for me either.
Or it's about romance between LGBTQ+ characters? But we already have romance for homo- and bi- sexual characters in BL and GL. So it should be about TQ+ only? :joy:

yeah, i had a paragraph explaining how i think the genre is too vague or shouldnt be a genre because of that main reason but imma keep my mouth shut incase someone takes it the wrong way

Very excited to hear about the sub genre addition  I feel like almost (if not) every story could benefit from that to various degrees.

I assume it's to cover all the other sexualities not strictly BL GL or straight? To cover all the bases? It does seem weird to lump Ace and Pan into the same territory, and I feel like people who want their searches to be better prefer more specific genres, but it's a step forward, I guess.

I'm pretty happy about these new changes, but I gotta admit I'm a bit bummed that the two genres option isn't going to be available until later rather than releasing both changes at the same time. I'm excited to be able to include the LGBTQ+ genre for my comic, but as several people are already kinda noting, it makes more sense as a secondary genre. It would be nice to be able to keep my comic in Fantasy while adding LGBTQ+ so that people looking for that sort of story can more easily find it. But I'm glad that doing so will be an option soon. ^_^

i figured the distinction was made clear about that here in the email

While we recognize BL or GL and LGBTQ+ genres are not always mutually exclusive, we are being mindful of certain portrayals within these genres that we’d like to keep separate from the LGBTQ+ genre. We believe that it’s incredibly important for creators to have the freedom and flexibility to self identify the genre of their series and want to create more safe spaces for creators to tell their stories.

the tropes and content differ so like you can kinda tell what's a bl/yaoi story from a story that contains or focuses on an mlm relationship
