I want to share my little thoughts on this censorship things.
I think one single reason why everything is censored nowadays is how they build their revenue model. If they rely on ads, then most ad companies will put restriction on how the site display their contents. No nudity, no violence, no controversial topics, just to name a few because they care about advertiser's brand image who's paying the money (and their self image). After all, no advertiser wants to display their product on wrong, unrelated site (for example: health product on sites displaying nudity) because it's highly likely their brand image will hurt. Not to mention if the ad companies is a giant corporation (I'm looking at you, Google). There are strong political power and ideology steering those kinds of companies, because they serve ads to millions of sites seen by billions people on the world. Dealing with billions people is always hard, because make them angry then higher the chance they will persuade people to distrust the ad company, and that's very bad. Oh and let's just not talk about how awful some countries put restrictions worse than NA.
A way to disable such restrictions is to have something not relying on ads, like "subscription model" or something else. Definitely not relying on common ad companies. But in the current era, who is willing to spend money to consume some content on the net, if there were exist others who can provide for free? That's something driving most to rely on ads nowadays.
They could build an entire ad-serving ecosystem for their own, but building an ad-serving system is very difficult. Online advertising is pretty much convoluted, they need to build audiences, they need to convince brands, competing with established ad companies, yada yada yada....
