Hello guyz/gals,
I'm writing some scripts for my webcomic and i would like to introduce a corporation that it's a satire of McDonalds. I would like to use their logo, but i don't know if that's legal or if i could have problems. Anybody does know anything abour this?
thanks in advance
mr.hikki
Unless you're making money off the comic, you probably won't run into any legal issues... but honestly you're still better off just making up a fake company. The idea of McDonalds is so universal that if you drew a logo and a restaurant that even vaguely looked like it people would get the idea without you having to use their actual branding.
Yea its funnier that way too, like reversing the M logo to W and name it WacDonalds instead.People will get the idea
Yep, thanks Kay and chijo.
Actually I was thinking about the reversed M into a W, so i guess yep, the idea will be understandable.
Here's a sample of a spoof logo i'm doing for my comic similar to what @chjio was saying... I made Panasonic logo Fansonic instead. People will know that it's based from Panasonic.
But I agree with @Kaykedrawsthings where you're better off making up a fake company. ^u^
If it's for a spoof, you can mock a brand. But it's easier to create an analogue of the company you want to criticize.
just draw a farmer or farm animal next to the mac Donald name that way you can use the nursery rhyme as a scape goat
When I made references to the big American tech companies in one comic I switched the logo fonts around and replace the Apple with a Pear. Although I do directly reference Google in other comics. Oh, and I also used my own version of a google doodle for my zombie comic. But yeah, it depends very much on how well known the company is and whether people will spot the reference. I can't imagine any alterations to MacDonalds going over people's heads unless the change is surprisingly dramatic.
Speaking of which could you use a device say like a screenshot of iOS and put it in your own comic, would that be allowed? Or no?
I did something like this in one of my old local comic strip
I see, though it was a drawing but could you paste a screenshot though? I mean I have seen it done in a manga, but I'm still not sure if it's really allowed..
As for putting a screen grab of an iOS into your comic, you could do it, but I wouldn't? It would be stylistically different than the rest of the comic. To me it would feel like you were watching a live action movie and then suddenly one scene was done via animation or vice versa.
So their aren't any legal issues if you do though? And, I see.
You're only going to run into legal issues if either your comic gets VERY popular and/or you're making a significant profit from it.
Agree, by the end of the day, it's all about the money
But for the most part I can use it, right?
I'm not a lawyer, but I think you'll be fine
Alright, and thanks!
Make up a fake company that is easily recognizable as McDonald's... but it isn't. Never use a corporate logo unless you have a permission.
Oddly though, how would you get permission? Just to ask.
