Video Game Woes

Okay, so sometime in the next 6-8 months, I may be getting myself a PS4. I already know I'm grabbing FF15, but over the last 4 years my love of video games has sort of declined coz I'm not a super big fan of the 1st person shooter/POV type of video game. On my PS3 I have Dead Island(which is of that sort) and I barely play it. I have Call of Duty Black Ops 2 and it is STILL IN THE PLASTIC. And it's not for lack of trying- I dont care for all the spinning camera angles, and also I think I get vertigo staring at it after a while(I get headaches, feel woozy and nauseous)...I sometimes kid about taking Dramamine in order to play one of those type games, but I think I might be heading in that direction.

Also- I was considering getting Overwatch(yeah, I think it's more of the same), but on top of the 1st person shooter issues I get tired of games that FORCE you have the online option(also: not a big fan of playing online with others)- especially when you have to pay a fee(yeah I know it's toward the online maintenance and upgrades and stuff). I onno- I get it, but I guess I'm trying to figure out is it worth it?

I wanna try out new games & stuff, but I dont want to invest in something that I'm going to end up feel like I wasted money on...anyone have any insight?

Honestly, stick with what you like. Not everyone enjoyed romantic comedies, staged theatre, or sushi- and while it's fine to dip your toes into the water sometimes, there's plenty of other options out there.

I play puzzle, adventure, and role-playing games almost exclusively, with a few platformers here and there. If you are a visually-stimulated and plot-oriented gamer, you might want to consider visual novels like 999, Ace Attorney, or Professor Layton. Just because the gaming media pushes the yearly shooters, occasional first-person RPGs like Dishonored, Fallout, and Elder Scrolls, and roller coaster, set piece-driven titles, doesn't mean there aren't a slew of alternatives out there. Gaming, like art, has a number of genres that you should weigh the positives and negatives.

With a PS4, you will have a lot of variety available to you. If you were buying an xBox One, you might have to deal with a larger library of shooters, but there's some alternatives, as well. Of course, if portable, intimate gaming is what you want, consider a 3DS, which is lower in unit and game price and has a pretty huge library of everything BUT shooters. Whatever you do, don't buy a Wii U, or even a Nintendo Switch at launch. The company needs to prove it has third party support before it can even be considered an option.

I don't know much about exclusive games on the PS4, but I've got Overwatch on PC. I'm a little like you, where I'm not super fond of multiplayer arena matches type of games. To an extend, you can just join a pub server in Quick Play (casual) and just have some fun shooting some dudes. The game is designed around team play, and obviously a team with communication would have an easier time winning. But that obligation (if you can call it that) is not as present/expected in Quick Play compared to Competitive. In the event that someone's being really salty, it's easy to ignore them. For the most part, people are mostly nice.

One big gripe I have is that while Overwatch has a one-time payment, it has optional micro-transaction for cosmetics. This game has one of those "loot boxes" system where everytime you level up, you get a loot box of 5 cosmetic items like sprays, skins, voice lines, etc. There was a Halloween event last month, and there were event specific items. Because of the random nature of it, after all the hours I put into it I still didn't get the ONE skin from it (got pretty much all the other ones that I don't mind not having though!). Yes, they have an option to buy it with in-game currency, but it's pretty high, and I'm a relatively new player so I don't have enough time to save up for it. So I'm kinda burnt out now.

But bottom line, it's not a bad shooter. It's something that I play once in awhile, maybe 1-ish hour at a time. It combined a few elements from other genres to make a pretty neat shooter. I don't know if I'm doing a good job at selling you this game lol. It's ok to not like things.

Kinda in the same boat. Not big on FPS with very few exceptions (like Bioshock), and even a lot of the bigger non-FPS games lately just haven't been my cup of tea. However, with your PS4, you've got access to some of the best Indie games out there, which are often kind of what I enjoy most these days... Games like Journey, The Unfinished Swan, Abzu, Fire Watch, ect have been some of my favorite games the past years. They're short plays, but really made my PS4 worth it in my opinion.
Some other bigger name games that made my PS4 worth it for me include Infamous Second Son, Assassin's Creed Syndicate (I know this one is debatable, but I enjoyed it. Not as good as past ones but I think it redeemed the AC name at least a bit), and The Bioshock Collection (FPS, but still great IMO). Upcoming game-wise, I'm really glad I have my PS4 for Little Big Planet 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2 (Really cannot wait for RDR).
I know a lot of these aren't exclusive to PS4 but exclusive franchises like Infamous, Little Big Planet, and some really freaking great Indie games (Like Journey and Unfinished Swan) make PS4 my personal preference.

Yeah definitely stick to what you enjoy, because games are so expensive anymore that it's kind of a waste to pour $60 into a game only to find out you hate it. I have a different issue in that I just have way too many games and enjoy playing too large of a variety that I end up neglecting a lot of them, so I've kinda been trying to limit myself to ONLY buying games I can tell is so far my jam that there's no doubt I'll pour time into it to make spending money on it worth it. (still end up with a lot of stuff I'll never touch, though, because I enjoy getting humble bundles partly because charity and partly because getting a couple games that I really want in a pack of 5-10 for only a few bucks is fine by me. If I at least like one game in the pack, it's worth it to me).

I do have Overwatch, but I personally am not a fan, but a lot of that is because I'm not huge on group settings in general, on top of being forced to play with strangers because I don't have enough friends who play it. If you're not a big fan on first person shooters, and don't want to play something where you're forced to play online with strangers, I don't recommend getting it at all. Overwatch is nothing but online multiplayer and first person shooting, there is no storymode (which is kind of a shame since all Blizzard's previous titles had fun storymodes you could play on their own, even their games people typically got for the multiplayer in the first place, like StarCraft. Even WoW was very easy to just play 100% solo if you wanted, you just couldn't do dungeons and raids.) There is that off chance that you might like it in spite of this (I have a couple friends who also hate games like that who wound up enjoying it), but I'd save your money for something you're more certain about, personally, because there's that chance you won't, and I don't think a $60 gamble is worth it. Maybe see if a friend has it and try out their copy before making that leap.

I wish I had actual recommendations, but besides my gaming PC, the only current gen console I have is the Wii U, and I don't really pay attention to what's out on PS4 and XboxOne.

Went to my local Game Stop...kind of been out of the whole game landscape for what seems like a LONG while. Couldnt really get any insight from the clerk there coz all of a sudden the place got slammed with customers.

I havent really played Nintendo since Super NES. Not big on their later systems, and def not big on handheld gaming systems. I prefer playing a console on a large screen.

Also not a fan of FPS shooters, though even they take up most of the market I have managed to find a good amount of fun games that do not fall under that category.

You can always just stick with the free games the PSN gives you monthly (I assume you'll get + if you want to play games online like Overwatch) You can also check out their sales at their online store when they have them (you can access them on the PS4), sometimes they drop the prices really cheep.

If you want story driven third person action game the Uncharted series is a good one (you can get the collection which is the first 3 games for the price of one, and then there is 4) I really enjoyed those ones, 2 and 4 being my favourites.

Last of Us is also pretty good from what I played, though I still have to finish up that one. Similar style to Uncharted, but not exactly.

Depending on how long it's been since you played a FF game, there's the remastered versions of X and X-2 and a port of Type-0. Those titles are both relatively cheep by now.

Disgaea 5, I really love this series, personally I don't think 5 was as good as 4 but I still enjoyed my time on it. Tactics RPG that likes to make fun of itself, level cap 9999. I invest way too much time in this series.

Ratchet and Clank was a lot of fun, and it looks great on the PS4. Platformer game, very cute.

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir Seriously, I can't recommend this one enough, it's a remaster from the PS2 and did they every perfect what I would already consider a gem on the ps2. Beautiful 2D Side scroller / RPG.

For indi titles Journey, Don't Starve (Don't Starve Together if you want the multiplayer version) Armello, Binding of Issac, Bastion, Transistor, Geometry Wars, Limbo are some that come to mind, I'd have to check my library... PSN+ gives me so much crap I never have time to play it all.

Infamous isn't bad from what I played though again, another titles I never got around to finishing. And I think there is a God of War something remastered for the PS4, enjoyed those games on the PS2/PS3 though fair warning, they do a lot to deserve the M title, so if over the top blood shed and nudity is not your thing stay away.

I'm not sure if it's your cup of tea, but look into the assortment of indie titles on PSN. There are so many fresh ideas and spins on a vide variety of genres. Plus, the games are MUCH cheaper than full priced new release games, not to mention that they don't drag on forever, so in the small amount of time you have between your art, you actually feel like you've made progress. Here's a sample of indies I've loved:

The last FF game I played is FF13( I dont do the part 2s). I dont care for playing the FF games online via PC; I hate that Square does that. Ive been on Sony since the PS1, and I was told that the remake of FF7 will be a PS4 exclusive.

Havent seen actual gameplay from Uncharted to gauge whether I would like it or not. If it's anything like Tomb Raider, then I'll pass.

I dont wanna seem like I'm shooting down others' game choices; I'm just REALLY particular(picky) about what interests me in a video game. The same issue that I'm having with Overwatch, I had concerning the Destiny series.

Also, if you're looking for a decent MOBA title, SMITE is free to play. The characters rotate every... week I think it was? You can pay 29.99 (not sure what it is in USA, I'm in Canada) to permanently unlock the entire roster and all future characters they add. Though it's like Overwatch when it comes to micro-transactions for cosmetics.

ALSO. Speaking over Overwatch. If you are unsure about if you will like it and uncertain about spending money on it, WAIT UNTIL NEXT WEEK TO PLAY IT. Next weekend it is going to be free to play on that weekend for all systems. (November 18 - 21) Edit: Though you probably will not have a PS4 by then, but this promotion also includes PC. Though I've no idea if you can run it or not, I'm just relaying the information.

Regarding Uncharted and Tomb Raider. Do you mean the old games or the reboot? As the newer version DOES takes a lot of ques from the Uncharted series (except for those ****ing insta death button choice BS. That's all on Tomb Raider) As for the old games I can hardly remember playing them it's been so long, I just remember them being kinda slow and boring.

For me Uncharted was a lot more fun, I couldn't keep invested in the new Tomb Raider to get very far at all.

You know that story about the man talking to his doctor about "It hurts when I do this"? Don't do that. You might want to look into seasickness methods as you're clearly suffer easily from "cybersickness"- you focus so much on the 1p visuals that your inner ear thinks it's your real POV and you get sick because of it.

Play other games that are more 3rd person or without a heavy 3D rapid focus, there's plenty of nice titles to enjoy for PS4. Persona 5 is coming out soon, and the Japanese release has been getting wild reviews. There's some great JRPG choices. There's also stuff like Until Dawn and other action story game stuff.

If you have friends that like to play games, head over to them and play the games that you're interested in. Kinda like trying out a demo - if you'll enjoy it, you can buy your own copy. If not, you'll know what to avoid.

You can also watch on Youtube how other people play the newest games. 2 or 3 videos should be enough for you to decide whether you'd like that game or not, to avoid spoilers in case you'd be interested and wish to have fresh experience with the game.

You don't have to spend money and test everything by yourself, or depend on peoples opinions alone, when you can do the above options for free. The only thing you have to invest is your time.
