What and how do you consider NSFW here?

Hello, noob user here again.

I think we all know what NSFW means. But I really want to know if there are more variables you consider relating to the NSFW tag. However, I have two questions, one of them simpler than the other one.

Question 1: Is it allowed to post NSFW content in my webcomic? If, for example, a page will contain boobs (with nipples), will covering these fragments with a black label solve the problem?

And question 2: How much is the content you consider NSFW? Or better said: how much is dark comedy allowed? Making fun of dead people (in comics) will probably get my comic banned? Sensitive events and topics?

One of my comics contains dark comedy. But not in the sense "I'll have a limit", no. It's in the sense of "I'll cross this line when I can, and then the next one, and the next one, and the next one...".

Currently the comic is in hiatus state for drawing issues, but I'm thinking in going back to it again and I was thinking in posting in Tapastic but before I screw up with people telling me "son you can't post this kind of comics here".

For the record, I don't have a problem with that comic not being posted in Tapastic, I have a website with these comics linked to DeviantArt, Tumblr, etc.

From the Content Policy:

Adult Material: Tapastic ALLOWS mature content featuring nudity, non-graphic sex, extreme violence, and strong language as long as it is behind our NSFW filter. Tapastic DOES NOT ALLOW pornography or hateful content that targets a specific person or group of any kind.

So if the page shows nudity, just mark it NSFW, and you don't have to cover anything with a black bar. If it's gonna be graphic sex, since that's not allowed, general consensus is that you should mark it NSFW and obscure something.

NSFW is not a rating, it's a warning for public browsing -- basically a warning that "there's content on this page that you might not want to look at in public or at work, where it could get you in trouble." The question of "how far can dark comedy go" has nothing to do with the Not Safe For Work filter -- whether you consider making fun of dead people to be in poor taste or not, there is nothing about it that's not safe to open at work or in public.

However, if you wanna do cross-the-line dark comedy that pushes the limits of things like racist jokes, that's something where it might start to qualify as "hateful toward a specific group," which is simply not allowed on Tapastic.

Question 1: There is a Content Policy. Read it. It is linked right there in the right-hand sidebar on the page where you upload your comic.

Short answer - for those who really can't be bothered to read three paragraphs of text - is that yes, NSFW content is allowed, but if it goes beyond a certain limit, it needs to be marked as NSFW and put behind a filter.

Question 2: I consider anything allowed in your average action movie to probably be okay in terms of violence and language - which are currently the only two things I need to worry about, since my comic doesn't contain nudity or sex at the moment.

Dark comedy is fine. Making fun of dead people is fine (though note that "hate speech" is not allowed, so if you're making fun of people who have died due to racially motivated violence, you should probably reconsider. Like, Holocaust jokes? Probably not okay.). You need to concern yourself with graphic violence, depictions of sex and/or nudity, and excessive swearing. Tapastic's policy on nudity is a bit strict, but that's because their app is available via Apple, and their content policy is strict.

I personally have generalized NSFW down to blood/gore of any kind and nudity of the good parts. Dark humor, uh i dunno...abortion jokes or something. I just give a heads up sensitive material

Okay, thanks for the warning everyone. I honestly didn't read the content policy because I thought there was not, like in WebToon (who the heck doesn't put a link of rules/policy in their main page?). So, thanks for the answers, for all the good that does.

I don't really consider some of the things I draw to be under NSFW since to me my art is not that detailed or good enough to show things of in that matter.

I also have that question. I have an older comic hosted on SmackJeeves that is literally a PWP that I'm not sure would be allowed on Tap.

My own consideration of NSFW is actual depictions of sex with DRAWN genitals. Gore. Extreme Violence.
I don't consider nudity NSFW since it could be artistic nudity for all I know. Secondly, with sex acts, I've seen enough rated PG-15 with "implied sex" so I'm only calling it NSFW if full-on cocks are drawn out with or without censorship

I use it whenever there's an f bomb. I actually asked tapastic exactly how many times I can use it before I have to mark it NSFW, but they never responded.

My guess is that they don't want to give an exact number, but I really wish they'd at least differentiate between sex NSFW and cursing NSFW. Like it's kind of strange since I expect people who are familiar with comics and getting an audience to know how badly putting an NSFW filter on things can skew the amount of subs or views you get, but I'm not going to risk a strike or whatever kind of penalty they give out. So for now there's literally only one chapter that doesn't have an NSFW filter on a comic that has had no sex scenes or anything actually offensive besides 1 f bomb per chapter whatsoever yet.

Also, I'm planning on having somewhat graphic chapters later so my readers won't even get a warning for those since they'll just assume 'oh, it's just another f-bomb lol'...yeah, nope. And I'm not putting a personal warning either because I can't just slap it on without at least giving away some of the plot.

Sorry I kind of rambled, but if you want my opinion, the clearest advice the website gave me was 'if you won't show this to a mother, mark it as that' and even then that's kind of subjective. So just follow that I guess.

Oh, huh, I hadn't considered putting NSFW on swearing. I assumed it was for stuff in the vein of "if somebody's boss glanced at their screen would they get in trouble for looking at this page" and actual dialogue is probably too small to be noticed at a glance.

I'm gonna have to think about this, but I think I'm in the same boat as @PopteenPrincess as much later in the comic I'm gonna have some visually graphic stuff and I don't want people thinking it's "just another f-bomb"

YES. If you're gonna use the NSFW term there really should be flags along with NSFW to specity what KIND of NSFW it is (especially since the term NSFW is most often associated with porn or nudity) For me... I have a few moments of swears in my comic but with nothing else I don't really see a reason to NSFW the whole page because I feel like it gives off the... wrong idea about it? (If there was a "language" flag I'd definitely use that though)

As to answer your question... I'd say graphic sex, genitals and gore/large amounts of blood.

Generally, what I gathered from my initial inquiries to the management before I made the decision to try the site, Tapastic is okay with non-explicit sexuality, full nudity, and non-graphic violence. They're not okay when it crosses the line into pornography, which would mean it's more about the sexual titillation than anything else, and they're not okay when it comes to just an orgy of violence.

Personally I've always felt that "safe for work" was a fairly inane label, but these are the limitations it seems to indicate here. Honestly, there probably won't ever be a label accurately descriptive enough to help most, unfortunately. But I do hope this helps!

I'm actually not even sure anymore but I know Tap is quite lenient when it comes to NSFW compares to Webtoon... as for how much NSFW is too much, I know of a comic on Tap that literally every pages is under a mature filter with some form of nudity/sexual and mind you I do enjoy it //punched in the guts

Mmm... Judging by the things I've seen, they'r ok with "light" sex, but as far as I can see, you won't find something explicit as a hentai... I find it annoying, they could put a +18 filter and not block the drawers mind, I've read a lot of erotic comics of an excellent quality, but it seems this is not the place for those =_=,

My rule of thumb for sex is: NO close-ups of genitalia, NO penetration shots, and NO more than half an ounce of fluid.
For violence: Nothing to exceed Terra Formars level of graphicness.

I would have to agree that Tapastic is somewhat laid back as far as what is safely "NSFW". I think as long as there isn't any visible penetration during the sex scenes (think of the sex in an R rated film! They almost never show genitals/penetration!) You're good!

I think as long as it isn't extremely violent (graphic details of organs, guts, gore).
