What are some good ways to practice shading with ink?

That and maybe I should practice inking too. Specifically referring to traditional micron pens. Though that would apply to any kind of pen.

Kind of messed up with an artwork involving inks. I plan to redo it but I also thought it would be a great opportunity to work on other weak areas in my artwork.

For shading with ink pens you could always try cross hatching.

Depends on what you want Oo

You can make good effects with only black and white or you can use different kinds of hatching: Cross hatching, like @insomniascrawl said, but also only one row of lines at the same time. I use several techniques in my manga Remember. See here, the smoke:

• Smoke: lines with change of direction, framed by thicker putlines
• upper left: Crosshatch, good for gradients if you play with thickness, length and space of the lines
• bottom panel: Speedlines, roughly all the same direction
• Also upper left panel: A lot of black helps to create the effect of a strong light source (like the many black on the child there)

My advice is: Try out. Try copying existing images and then draw it your way. Basically: No smoke in the world looks like I've drawn it. But I like the effects, so I decided to go with that. =)

You can also try screen tone although that's no longer just ink.

What are stippling and screentones?

So both are basically using dots to create tone. If you look closely on the image I posted above, you can see the dots. The difference between the two is stippling is done by hand while screen tone is overlay-ed on top of the line art. Traditionally screentone is a clear film with dots printed on that you stick on, but now with digital capabilities, most people make and use their own screentone digitally.
