I have only a handful of patrons, 11 to be exact, but I actually make $50 a month with just 11 people. Over half of them pay $5 or more a month, which is great! I don't know if that counts as successful, but I did notice more support after I changed the rewards to be more content based. Like as in they're getting extra parts of the story that others don't because they pay.
The $5 a month patrons get 4-koma comics that usually add a bit more characterization and fun tidbits to the characters that don't make it into the story, which seems to be appealing to a lot of them cause I had a few people up their pledges from $1 to $5 after I made that change and the newer patrons will more than likely choose the $5 tier right off the bat. And for me it's not a ton of extra work, just a one-page 4 panel comic a month.
So I would say don't just do early access but give them extra story-related content that can only be found on the patreon page.
