I think they're more common for specialty channels. (Forewarning, I know NONE of these channels ACTUAL names, just the themes. I don't have TV cable, I just see these when I go to the dentist or doctor, or even a restaurant and it's playing on the TV)
"Home and Garden" "Cooking Channel" "Lifestyle" "History (I don't know why history???)" kind of networks all seem to have these shows.
Where it's just... a concept but with a strange game show or competitive like element to them, but with building houses, or cooking, or running around the place with other people to see who can run around the place the fastest (Great race is that the name??? I'm sorry I REALLY don't know the names of ANY of these shows, a lot of them REALLY feel the same and I'm usually not in the building long enough to actually finish an episode)
Netflix has them too, "Nailed It!" is a cooking theme one that is I see showing up on there a lot in my que.
EDIT: Honestly, I am not a fan, but I don't think they're the worst kind of content that you can run into?? For me that is shows that are comedy, but have the actors pause... after a joke.... and play a laugh track to tell you "yes, that was funny, you were supposed to laugh" I know there are also series like this that are filmed in front of a 'live studio audience' which is still kinda annoying, but not as bad a laugh track because it's a little more genuine (but gets awkward if they laugh at something that feel like it's not supposed to be a punchline)
